National Parks, Conservancies, Private Concessions, & Private Game Reserves: What’s the Difference?

The inventory of safari destination types, from national parks to private concessions, can be baffling, and understanding where to safari requires knowing what each park or reserve has to offer.

National parks, private concessions, conservancies, and private game reserves are all fantastic, yet come with key differences. National parks are a country's flagship protected areas, filled with unrivaled animal abundance, while national conservation areas see wildlife and locals coexist. Private concessions lie within a national park, belonging to an area's broader ecosystem, and a private game reserve is smaller and standalone, offering fewer restrictions on activities and proximity to animals, and a more intimate safari.

In this article, we discuss the differences in more detail to help you understand how to plan your dream African safari experience.

6 Landscapes and Habitats to Explore on an African Safari

The inherent idiosyncrasy of safari is fueled initially by the diversity of the African landscape and habitats that you can explore during your safari.

Wild, untrammeled, redolent, and vivid, it creates canvases of eclectic spectacles that extend in a variety of directions, showcasing a patchwork of colors. Open landscapes allow you to see more of the wildlife quickly on the horizon. Closed habitats offer a more hidden wildlife view. Find a salt pan that blinds nature's antiquity or a tangled forest scarred by rumbling elephant herds, a mammoth baobab tree, or the babble of snaking waterways.

Understanding the landscape and habitat is essential for what you will see and the intimacy of your experience when on safari, which will brim with infinite possibilities.

6 Ways to Protect Endangered Rhinos on Your Next Safari

Viewing an endangered rhino in the wild is one of the most sought-after safari experiences and there are six ways to make sure you do not inadvertently help poachers find their next target during your African safari.

Finding a rhino in its natural habitat captures the animal’s surprising grace and fantastic size, but poachers can use information from your photos to find the animals in the wild. When on safari, you want to photograph as much of the wildlife as possible for your memories and to share the experience with your family and friends.

Social media may provide you with an immediate connection to do so, but comes with an ecological cost that you can avoid by learning how to project the necessary wildlife during and after your trip.

Where to Go Based on Your Safari Experience: From Novice to Enthusiast

While delivering an experience of a lifetime, a safari does not have to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Deriving from the Swahili term meaning “journey”, a safari encapsulates the essence of an extraordinary adventure of wilderness and wildlife discovery which can be appreciated once, twice, or several times.

Visitors embarking on their first safari will aim to include at least one safari experience during their travels, visiting national parks such as the Kruger in South Africa or smaller, private reserves like Sabi Sands. The second-time wildlife adventurer will look to spend more time on safari, often combining various regions, among them Tanzania’s Northern Circuit. A seasoned safari-seeker might indulge in lesser-known or off-the-beaten-track destinations, such as reserves in Zambia or southeastern Kenya.

There are three levels of safari, each offering its own unique allure. Here, we unravel the secrets of the African bush, where the rhythms of nature reign supreme and the whispers of the wild beckon you to embark on a personalized wildlife odyssey.

Ireland Tour Review: Off-the-Beaten-Path Sites, History,...

This was our first time booking a trip through Zicasso and we were very happy with the experience. The trip was fantastic. Everything that was scheduled was well planned, with excellent tour guides, communication with the guides, as well as travel agents live during the trip. The experience was five-star and we could tell that the way it was booked through Zicasso was better for the guides themselves versus how others in our group had booked (ie, through other agencies). There were fewer obstacles, complications, and issues with the booking. We could tell this through our tour guides, as they were more comfortable and knowledgeable about our requests and needs.

Tickets were all organized and either sent to us through PDF or to our tour guides. The off days were were well placed during the week and our requests were more than satisfied.

Zimbabwe, Botswana Birthday Travel Review: 9-Day Trip

Our special trip surpassed all of our expectations!

We had a large group wanting to go on safari and started planning around a year in advance. We also had small children coming with us and we were celebrating a milestone birthday! My first call was with Zicasso’s travel agent, who had the best enthusiasm and confidence in delivering what we wanted. The other travel partner was my main point of contact afterwards and she probably ended up answering at least 10,000 questions for me!

Each moment of the trip was specially curated and special. They did a great job finding camps that would give us a unique experience rather than becoming redundant. The hospitality at the camps and accommodations were unique and comfortable. We were all so happy with how everything went! We would definitely use this travel company again for our travel needs!

Namibia, South Africa Birthday Trip Review: 18 Nights

This was a well-planned trip that was personally rewarding and fulfilling.

This trip provided a great balance of the diverse locations from both countries (Namibia and South Africa).

I chose Zicasso as, at this stage of life, when taking well-deserved vacations, I just want to pay, pack, show up and have everything (accommodations, transportation, domestic and international flights, tours, attention to safety, and additional recommendations) accounted for. And that is exactly what the Zicasso's travel expert provided via her tour agency.

I was able to share my must-haves/nice-to-haves and she customized a vacation package that tended to every detail. It was a wonderful balance of rustic and luxury. It was also our July “birthdaycation” for my aunt and me, and we were surprised at multiple locations with surprise birthday acknowledgements. Birthdays are very special to me, so this was a major “icing” on the cake for me on this vacation.

Although there was a minor “hiccup” on the day of arrival, the travel specialist's “on-the-ground” (local) staff pivoted and quickly and professionally found another option for us for our airport pickup. This shows the mark of a company interested in ensuring the complete satisfaction of their clients.

For the destinations the travel expert specializes in, they will be my first point of contact when looking to make my next vacation destination.

Well done!
