Tokyo – Arrive and Relax in Central Tokyo
It is hard to make sense of old Japan without first discovering the contemporary city. Never-ending hoards of people whizz by as a billion neon lights flash all around. At first, it might seem like chaos, but gradually you can make sense of the order here. Everything is spotlessly clean, everything works like clockwork, and nothing seems out of place. Today you will be greeted at Tokyo’s international airport and transferred to your hotel in Shinjuku, the city’s heart and transport hub. From your hotel, you can walk onto the streets and get to know modern Japan, from the famous Shibuya Crossing to small lanes populated by extravagant stores. There is lots of heritage to come, but right now you should make sense of what Japan has become today.

Detailed Description
This 10-day Japan tour is handcrafted for people who want to experience the country’s heritage. The itinerary is not a sightseeing tour, but rather an opportunity to travel into old Japan and live the traditions that are being kept alive. You may enjoy short immersions in the worlds of Samurai, Geisha and Shingon Buddhism. Spend a night in a ryokan, a night in a farmhouse inn, and another in a mountain temple. On the menu is kaiseki, sake, sushi, Hida beef, as well as an authentic Japanese tea ceremony. At times you will be wearing a kimono, and at others, you can drift off to the sound of chanting monks.
You will also spend time experiencing contemporary Japan as well. Tokyo is an eye-opening place to start, the districts of Shinkuju and Shibuya completing different from the city’s early times. Traveling by Shinkansen trains helps you explore many destinations in just ten days, with clean and comfortable local trains taking you into the mountains. Throughout the tour, you can experience how tradition is being shifted into the modern day as it is less a juxtaposition and more a blurring of eras, even if shrines hide beneath skyscrapers and glass-fronted facades reflect 17th-century castles.
Land in Tokyo and get your bearings by exploring the heart of the city, particularly the hyper-modern districts that are packed with small stores and lights. This time will provide context for when you go back in time on day two, when Edo gardens, a Shinto shrine, and the city’s oldest Geisha district provide just some of the experiences. Travel by train to Takayama and settle into a ryokan, with a kaiseki dinner and an onsen, or hot spring bath, to relax in. Takayama is a beautifully rustic town in the mountains, as well as the gateway to Japan’s most unique rural town, the now UNESCO World Heritage Shirakawa-go. After some sake and tofu, you will spend the night in a traditional farmhouse inn after an evening spent walking streets of gassho-zukuri farmhouses, which translates as “constructed like hands in prayer”.
Kanazawa is an old castle town, famous for its Geisha and Samurai. The town was a 17th-century cultural hub, complete with gardens, gates, and an old fish market revered across all of Japan for its sushi. Spend the following three days in Kyoto, Japan’s heritage capital. You will explore many of the famous temples and gardens, as well as walk the bamboo groves. But as with the focus throughout this vacation, the idea is to live the heritage so you can enjoy a tea ceremony in a kimono, meet with a monk, take an origami course and enjoy ore kaiseki. The last night is really special, spent in a Shingon Buddhist temple on Mount Koyo, far from the rest of the world. You will then have day-room hotel use in nearby Osaka before your international departure. Read some Zicasso travelers’ Japan travel reviews to gain further inspiration for your own trip.

We just experienced amazing service and flawless execution on our custom-designed, 22-day itinerary from Zicasso’s travel company. Every single meeting went smoothly, with white-gloved drivers waiting for us beside luxury vehicles and guides who always went above and beyond. In fact, after leaving a shopping bag in a cab in Tokyo, we were blown away when our travel agency was able to track it down and deliver it back to our hotel. But that's not even the best part. The best part was the experiences. Our agent and the staff at the travel company really found the authentic, less-traveled experiences we love.
Tokyo and Kyoto were amazing, with private tours of gardens, temples, and the best local food. We did washi paper making at a 400-year-old workshop and a private calligraphy lesson, attended a real sumo practice, walked the bamboo forest, and dressed in kimonos for tea service.
But our most memorable experiences were found in Niigata, where we stayed in a lovely ryokan and were served dinner on the tatami mat in our room. We slept soundly with the relaxing sound of the hot spring water flowing in our private bath.
In Yamagata, where we spent the day with an enchanting Yamabushi guide, climbing sacred Mount Haguro and learning about the life of connection with nature that he chose. We loved it when he blew his conch shell horn to scare away the demons as we entered new parts of the forest.
And in Okinawa, we had the most interesting Blue Zones cooking class and lunch with Yukie Miyaguni, who appeared in the Netflix documentary about longevity and medicinal foods, and looks 25 years old at 55. We also learned about the ancient art of sabani making and spent an afternoon on the beautiful clear waters in one, visiting pristine, remote beaches and collecting beautiful pink shells.
It was these unique, enlightening experiences, away from crowds and tourists, that showed us the real Japan we wanted to see. Our agent understood what we wanted and provided the absolute perfect mix of luxury (every accommodation exceeded our expectations, with club lounge access in Western-style hotels), adventure, and top-shelf service. It was perfect.

Zicasso's travel specialist and her team planned an absolutely outstanding 16-day trip for me and my family. We visited Tokyo, Ghibli Park (near Nagoya), Kanazawa, Kyoto (with day trips to Nara and Osaka), and then wrapped things up with two nights at a beautiful and luxurious ryokan in Hakone.
Communication leading up to the trip was clear and efficient, and whenever we had a question during the trip, we were able to get quick answers from our travel company's rep in Japan.
I would absolutely book another trip with this company.

Four fellow travelers and I recently completed a customized fall tour in Japan. While there, we traveled from Tokyo to the Fuji, Kyoto, and Kanazawa areas. This was one of several tours organized for me by Zicasso agents. Although they have all been excellent, our agent was the most accommodating in terms of service and special requests.
The Ryokan accommodation she booked for us on Lake Kawaguchiko was out-of-this-world, with a magnificent view of Mount Fuji from our balcony.
She allowed us to leave her tour temporarily to pursue a special interest. She provided us with excellent guides in each region and arranged for them to deliver our group, which was somewhat overwhelmed by the Japanese train system, right to the door of the railway cars and have someone meet us when stepping off at the next location. She organized short-notice requests in terms of ground transport without missing a beat.
Her efficiency and response time while planning the trip were incredible, especially since I was on Canadian time and she on British. I would highly recommend her for her great skill in customizing Zicasso tours to meet your wishes and special needs.

We loved working with Zicasso’s travel specialist. He and his team created a seamless, thoughtfully curated trip, with the perfect balance of guided experiences and time to explore.
Every detail felt intentional and each guide was exceptional—knowledgeable, warm, and engaging—which made the entire journey feel personal and effortless. Highlights included our Tokyo tour, hands-on cultural experiences, and our time in Kyoto, which was our favorite city.
Overall, it was a beautifully executed and memorable experience, and we would absolutely work with the tour operator again.

We recently returned from our trip to Japan, which was booked with the tour operator through your platform. We are writing to share that the entire itinerary was exceptionally well designed and executed.
Zicasso’s travel specialist paid meticulous attention to our requirements, including our dietary preferences and specific trip objectives. We stayed four nights at our hotel in Tokyo, where the staff, amenities, and services were excellent. We also spent three nights at our hotel in Kyoto, which provided one of the best boutique hotel experiences we have ever had. The artistic design, location, and level of service were truly outstanding.

Our trip was wonderful and we had an excellent planner. He always responded within 24 hours and had an answer for whatever I was asking. Here is some additional feedback:
The documents provided (itinerary, cultural information, tour guide) were all very easy to read and informative. The instructions for using the trains and other modes of transportation turned out to be crucial for us.
We had a great guide in Tokyo. She spoke English well, provided interesting information at the sites we visited, and catered the day to our needs. She was also very good with children.
We ended up not going to Hakone, which was part of the itinerary, and our agent was able to help us get refunds for those tickets, which I understand was an unconventional request. It was nice to know the tickets and money didn't go to waste.
The Miyajima hotel and stay was so beautiful, and our experience there was very unique. I'm so glad our agent planned that as part of our trip.
The hotel in Tokyo was almost perfect; the staff were fantastic, the rooms were comfortable, and the included breakfast was delicious. The only drawbacks were that the pool was closed for renovations, which was disappointing, and their fitness center was very small and would often get extremely crowded in the mornings.
We had a good guide in Kyoto, but probably could've done a better job to account for the heat. We were outside for long stretches; I'm sure he just wanted to get us to more sites, but by the end of the day we were miserable from the sun and humidity. We had children and seniors in our family, and sometimes we were standing in the heat as he explained something which wasn't ideal. His English was okay, but some of our party felt he had difficulty answering some of our questions.
On our trip back from Kyoto to Tokyo, it's not clear why the agency booked us on the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo, then on a Narita Express from Tokyo to Shinjuku, when we could've taken the train to Shinagawa and saved some time.
Our agent clearly explained that the agency could not make restaurant reservations for our party, but that would've been very helpful since we were a group of 12 and it was often difficult to make that work. We ended up doing it ourselves or through the hotels.
The machiya houses were super-cool, but eight people in one of them was a lot. Also, I understand they're Japanese style, but there wasn't much furniture in there, so we ended up having to sit on beds or on the floor.
The IC cards didn't seem to be separated by child and adult (hopefully I'm not wrong there). This created an issue when we scanned our cards along with the child Shinkansen tickets. We got stopped and had to get the train attendant to help.
The sumo lunch was super-fun. The food (tonkatsu) was delicious, the service was great, and the wrestlers were very engaging, and a few of our party even got to wrestle a bit!
The photo shoot was enjoyable for the kids and the staff there were very patient, attentive, and helpful. Our pictures look great and they were ready within minutes!
I didn't like the application Zicasso uses for communicating with our travel agent. It was a little easier when it was just emails back and forth, but it was not ideal to have to log into a separate application (this one) to communicate. It's hard to do on a mobile phone and takes an extra few steps. It'd be better to communicate through existing platforms like email, WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook, Google Workspace, or Microsoft Teams.
