Day 1

Cong – The Rolling Hills of County Clare and County Mayo

Ireland is quick to charm. Touch down in Shannon, and it will be hard to believe that you are at an international airport, such is the ease and size of everything around you. Within a moment of leaving, you will be out on lush green landscapes, and rolling through the hills of County Clare. Castles and farmhouses stud the landscape and horses are often seen along country roads. Mountains are not usually clear but typically shrouded in a thin layer of mist that will draw you in. You will travel north through Galway to Cong, where a stunning castle-hotel awaits. Its grandeur is apparent from the driveway with a great avenue of trees that leads towards cultivated gardens and turrets.

Step out and inhale the serenity of the castle as you check into your suite and look out over the lake. In the dining room, you will find Waterford crystal chandeliers while along the corridors, it is all polished oak. A member of the Leading Hotels of the World, this is Ireland’s finest castle accommodation. Tonight is the first of four nights, and the tranquility of the castle makes a lovely contrast to the ruggedness of its surrounding landscapes. Over the next three days, you will be exploring the remote wild west of Ireland, returning each day to the comfort and luxury of this castle in Cong. Your stay tonight begins with a beautiful dinner in the restaurant as you settle in.

Detailed Description

On the west of Ireland, it is easy to be alone. Wind whips past your ear as silence stretches into the distance with nothing but sheep and cliffs keep you company. This part of Ireland is an escape from the world and a getaway into the simple beauty of Irish life. You will not be completely alone, however, as local guides show you the way and there will always be a warming castle or manor house to return to each evening. On these dramatic coastal landscapes, it will feel as though you have reached the edge of the world, and perhaps you have as you look out from to find that the next landmass is the Americas.

This handcrafted tour celebrates the wonders of Ireland’s western coastline. It takes you to wild places and through the off the beaten track sections along the coast. You will visit the popular highlights as well, such as the Cliffs of Moher, but the focus is on exploring landscapes unadulterated by tour buses. From County Mayo down to Kenmare Bay, this private ten-day journey covers all the major Irish coastal landscapes. It will be their diversity you will remember most, each snippet of coast quite different to the last, quite distinct in its atmosphere and beauty. Some need little introduction, others you will have to yourself.

Fly in and out of Shannon International Airport rather than wasting time crossing the country by flying into Dublin. For the first four nights you will be based in Cong, and staying in a castle that is part of the Leading Hotels of the World. Ease into the experience with a day searching out monastery ruins and the Doonbeg Valley, and then dedicate an entire day to Connemara, the wild and wondrous landscape where Kylemore Abbey hides. Spend day four on the Aran Islands, taking a boat onto the Atlantic and the windswept splendor of a virtually uninhabited island.

From Cong, you will dive into The Burren and Cliffs of Moher, both places with various hiking trails and endlessly open vistas. Your destination will be Ennis, where you spend two nights in a manor house, in a quaint Gaelic town. Explore the lesser-seen side of County Clare on day six before twisting along the Dingle Peninsula on day seven. Then it will be into County Kerry with some handpicked highlights of Killarney and the Ring of Kerry on route to two nights in Kenmare. Your final day is relaxed, spent cruising Kenmare Bay, a landscape that reflects the wild west Irish experience; it’s remote and beautiful, silent and serene, with always a surprise around the next corner. Read some of our travelers’ reviews for Ireland travel to discover new experiences to add to your own tour.

Scotland, Ireland Trip Review: Edinburgh, Aran Islands, Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, History, Art, 2 Weeks

We just spent two weeks in Scotland and Ireland, arranged for us by Zicasso’s travel specialists. What a five-star experience! Both of them have traveled extensively in the UK and Ireland, with one having grown up in the UK. They always seemed to know where we wanted to be.

This trip was a bit more challenging due to unexpected spine surgery a mere eight weeks prior to the trip. Between the perfect selection of lovely hotels at all the right locations and the nice people of these two countries, everything was accessible, despite using a walker. We could not have asked for more beautiful vistas, castles, and cultural amenities, ranging from lively Irish pubs to the finest museums (we’re art buffs). We also ate at spectacular restaurants selected by the travel company, in addition to terrific tours tailored to our specific interests.

Not only was the planning for the trip exceptional, but the travel specialists were there for us at a moment’s notice when things went awry. All trains in Scotland were canceled for a day due to 100mph winds from Storm Amy. We were pinned down in Edinburgh (a great place to be trapped) and took in additional sites, while the travel company saw to it that we had a lovely hotel room to spend our extra night in Edinburgh. Many people wound up sleeping in the train station. Our train was rescheduled strategically for the next day by the travel specialists, while we enjoyed Scotland’s National Art Gallery and our vacation continued seamlessly.

The transition from Scotland to Ireland was delightfully easy and our time in Ireland was spent exactly as planned. As I’m unable to drive and did not want my wife to be unable to sightsee while we traveled, the travel company got us (per our request) to far western Ireland and the Aran Islands, where Gaelic languages are still spoken and centuries-old Irish traditions are still maintained. We traveled by train so we could both sit back and take in the beautiful countryside.

There, we used our castle hotel in County Clare as a base for travel by car and enjoyed several days pursuing our own agenda and taking in the splendor of castle living. This was amazing, likely the most elegant place my wife and I have ever stayed, yet the venue had a comfortably casual vibe and an incredibly helpful staff that made accessibility problem-free. We would definitely block out a day just to stay on the castle grounds and enjoy the property and activities if we are able to return.

The Cliffs of Moher were spectacular, as were the Aran Islands, right down to a rainbow which vanished before we could find the “pot of gold” at the end. That being said, we think “the pot of gold” is Ireland itself... the sites, the people, the music, the food… the list is endless. We cleared US Customs in Shannon so we were able to fly to the US with no TSA or customs issues.

We returned to find an itinerary summary prepared by the travel specialists for submission to our travel insurance company for any storm-related refunds that the travel company had not already arranged for us. Simply a wonderful, stress-free trip, with the travel company at work continuously to assure that the experience was optimal, and it was five-star from start to finish. We can’t extend a higher recommendation to Zicasso’s travel specialists for a wonderful, intimate tour of the UK and Ireland.

Ireland, Scotland Travel Review: 23 Nights

Zicasso's travel specialist did a fabulous job at putting together an itinerary that took into account all of our requests, from places to visit, keeping costs in check, and giving us a mix of private and group tours. She hit it out of the park! We had a fabulous time and everything went off without a hitch. Our hotels were great, our guides were top-notch, and our transportation between destinations (plane, train, auto) was comfortable and seamless. My husband, Steve, and I highly recommend this agency.

Ireland Tour Review: Kinsale, Kilkenny, 8 Nights

Using Zicasso made planning travel in a foreign country so much smoother. The proposals we received were excellent and from the beginning, it was clear the tour company was the perfect fit for our group. We provided them with a wish list of places and experiences we hoped to include, and the team, especially one of our agents, pulled off something even better than we could have imagined. Every day was filled with meaningful sights, experiences, and laughs. We were even able to add a few small things as time allowed.

Our time in Ireland with the tour company exceeded our highest expectations. If you’re planning a special trip with family or friends, and looking for something personalized, well-paced, and full of authentic Irish character, this is absolutely the kind of experience to aim for. All of the accommodations they chose were wonderful, too.

Ireland Vacation Review: Walking, Sightseeing, Local Cuisine, 10-Day Trip

This was a perfect vacation. The itinerary set up by Zicasso's travel company was exactly what we wanted. We got to see a lot of Ireland and learn about each area, with a great mix of walking, sightseeing, experiences, relaxation, and culinary delights.

Our four accommodations in Ireland were top-notch. It was hard to leave each one because they were so lovely. And the food was exceptional at each meal (including breakfast!).

Our guide/driver was fantastic and really worked to make the trip perfect. He was professional, knowledgeable, and 110% prepared every day. He was able to adapt our itinerary each day to the weather, our energy levels, and even interests that emerged during our discussions. He knew each area we visited really well and provided so much interesting information and history. He was a very good driver and was always thoughtful, courteous, kind, and friendly. It was a pleasure to spend the 10 days with him.

Our one and only complaint about the trip was the room temperature in our first two hotels.
