Punta Arenas – Arrive in Punta Arenas, Chile Ready for your Journey South

Your journey to the southern pole of the globe will begin in the Patagonian city of Punta Arenas. Ships pull and out of port at all hours of the day, venturing from around Cape Horn or traveling southbound along the edges of the Continent. The majesty of the past recalls a sense of pride in the central square of Plaza de Armas, the main square that features the illustrious mansion that once belonged to the Braun-Menendez family. The scent of barley emanates from the Austral Brewery, one of the world’s southernmost producers of beer and a favorite of Patagonians.

The Museo del Recuerdo, Museum of Memories, is hosted within the Instituto de la Patagonia on the outskirts of the city. The gallery displays a collection of old steam engines, cars, and horse-carts that reflect the evolution of the city’s growth in population and industry. Your private transfer will greet you at Carlos Ibanez del Campo International Airport, and then you will make your way through the bustle of the city to reach the comforts of your luxurious hotel in view of the passing boats along the Strait of Magellan.

Detailed Description

Mix scenic flights and coastal explorations during your 14-day trip to Antarctica and the Falkland Islands for a luxurious and adventurous vacation. Your exciting expedition will highlight the diversity of the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic regions as you sail through the channels of the western shores of the Antarctic Peninsula, and then venture through the Antarctic Sound to reach the rarely visited Weddell Sea.  Cruise north over the Antarctic Convergence to reach the Falkland Islands, and your exploration becomes an epic journey encompassing kayaking alongside glaciers, zodiac boats reaching penguin colonies, and whale sightings around the open ocean. Your colorful and exciting expedition will offer legendary stories while you make unforgettable memories of your own.

Begin your exploration with your arrival in Punta Arenas, Chile. Spend time to take in the fascinating metropolis on the edges of the Southern Patagonia and visit the regional museum that depicts the evolution of the region over the past 150 years.  You could also wander the galleries of the new Nao Victoria Museum dedicated to accurate replicas of the famous ships that have sailed the waters of the Strait of the Magellan. After taking it all in, your flight will take you from Punta Arenas directly to King George Island on the South Shetland Archipelago.

Tour the research stations and then board your luxury vessel bound for the icy waters of the Antarctic Peninsula. Sail alongside the Gerlache Coastline and stop at the islands populated with penguin and seal colonies. The weather and shifting icebergs make each navigation through the waters tailored to the new journey, ensuring a unique cruise for you and your fellow passengers. Return up the coast to travel through Antarctica Sound and reach the Weddell Sea. The massive ice shelf overtakes a large portion of the southern body of water closer to the continent.

Visit the emperor penguins and the civil settlement of Esperanza to embark on a snowshoeing expedition before continuing north to the Falkland Islands. The west and east islands offer different wildlife and scenery, supporting Cobb’s wren and flightless teamer duck. Search for rockhopper and king penguins at distinctive locations around the islands, and take time to explore the British village ambiance of Port Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands and return to Punta Arenas, Chile to complete your full experience of Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic region.

Chile Tour Review: Atacama Desert, Patagonia, 2 Weeks

I spent two weeks in Chile and loved my experience. Zicasso’s travel consultant was great in planning an itinerary that catered to not only where I wanted to go, but my overall personality. I really enjoyed my time in the Atacama Desert and Patagonia. She was cognizant in planning activities that catered to my loves (i.e., nature), but at the same time ensured I was not run ragged with constantly being on my feet. Activities were not stacked one on top of each other, giving me the luxury of downtime for myself, with the right level of activeness that kept me engaged.

Ending my trip with the resort camp in Patagonia was a wonderful touch to my Chilean experience, giving a balance of being outdoors with a touch of luxury. She and the people she works with made sure I was kept apprised of what I needed to do in terms of times and locations, which was wonderful as it gave me one less thing to worry about on my vacation.
