A Glimpse into the History of World War II: East Germany & Poland Tour

View of The Old Town Hall in Munich, Germany

What to expect on this itinerary

The effects of World War II shaped Europe and left behind incredibly important stories for you to experience during your bespoke tour to Germany and Poland. Early-modern and mid-modern history comes to life in the grand cupolas and soaring church spires of antique neighborhoods. The sweeping vista from the Eagle’s Nest contrasts with the structure’s nefarious purpose and the galleries inside the former concentration camps are compelling as they tell the stories of those who passed through the gates. From restored synagogues in Krakow to murals along the Berlin Wall, you will be immersed in the indelible tales of the Second World War.  You can also extend your trip with other tours of Germany, so consider browsing some of our other itineraries as you plan your trip.

Day 1

Warsaw – Arrive in the Vibrant and Bustling Capital of Poland

Warsaw exudes a different Poland, one of diverse architecture that showcases the celebrations and scars of contemporary history. Restored Gothic churches rise above Brutalist concrete business buildings from the Communist era, as modern high-rises of glass and steel add a shimmer to the skyline. Each neighborhood adds to the complexity of Warsaw’s past, from Chopin to the Jewish Ghetto, and also speaks to the present with cosmopolitan cuisine and bars that bounce to an enticing beat. Your private transfer will greet at the Warsaw Chopin Airport upon your arrival and escort you to your stunning hotel near the edges of Old Town Square.

Trees shade the cobbled walkways as the spire of the 14th-century Cathedral of St. John rises above the sloping orange rooftops of the colorful buildings that surround. The aroma of fresh pierogi, a Central European dumpling, drifts out of the restaurants and cafes around the city. Nearby, the concrete structure of the Palace of Culture and Science represents the socialist architecture of the Soviet Union in the early 1950s. The façade remains the tallest in Poland, reaching a height of nearly 760 feet above the street.

Austria, Germany Tour Review: Vienna, Munich, Salzburg, Neuschwanstein Castle, Christmas Markets, 'Sound of Music' Experience, 1 Week

Our trip to Austria and Germany was initiated with a desire to see the Christmas markets. And yes, these were magical, but Zicasso’s travel company also included guided trips at each location to fully enjoy our trip. The private ride through Bavaria to Neuschwanstein Castle was Christmas-card picturesque. Walking through Vienna on a guided tour was as if we were visiting Franz Joseph and Sisi. The travel company created an itinerary that balanced the needs of a group with different ages, interests, and budgets, and everyone had a magnificent time.

Finland, Germany Trip Review: 2 Weeks

It was a fantastic trip! We had enough to do in every location, but still enough free time to explore on our own. I do wish we had been given a bit more detail on some of the tours; we were surprised a few times. It did not negatively impact us, but it would have been nice to be more prepared.

Germany, Austria Travel Review: Bavarian Alps, 12-Day Trip

We started our planning with Zicasso’s travel specialist, and she was fabulous to work with in creating the perfect itinerary. We then transferred to another travel specialist, who completed the work and created a bucket-list trip for us. Every detail was perfect. The drivers and guides were incredible and very flexible with our pace of traveling. We reconnected with the travel specialist during our trip through WhatsApp. She again kept us informed on schedules and contacts during our travels. The selected hotels were perfect for us. This was our third trip with a Zicasso partner and I am sure we will be back for adventure.

Germany, Austria Mother-Daughter Trip Review: Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Food Tour, Cooking Class, Concert Experience, 10 Days

Zicasso’s travel specialist was outstanding! From the beginning, he listened and curated exactly the kind of experience we had hoped for. The trip was fantastic. The hotels were perfect and everything went smoothly.

The guides for the Salzburg food tour and Vienna walking tour were particularly outstanding, as well as our driver-guide in Munich. The travel specialist created a custom itinerary that not only met our expectations, but exceeded them, with VIP experiences that made this mother-daughter trip truly special.

Germany, Czechia, Austria, Hungary Vacation Review: Berlin, Walking Tour, 2 Weeks

Things went according to plan and schedule, with the exception of one hotel being changed late in the game, but all accommodations were great and we had a really nice trip. Zicasso’s tour operator helped us book a few tours for others who were not part of our overall trip, but who we were meeting in Germany, and that was extremely helpful.
