A Measure of Time: 9 Days Inside Japan's Artisan Watch Culture

What to expect on this itinerary
Structured around independent watchmaking, your nine-day Japan artisan itinerary moves through three cities that embody different dimensions of craft: Tokyo's precision and modernity, Kyoto's layered heritage and finishing philosophy, and Kanazawa's mastery of surface and ornament. Each day connects horological thinking to the broader Japanese devotion to material, process, and patience, from kaiseki kitchens to gold-leaf ateliers, tailoring houses to ancient gardens. Leave not just with a watch, but with a language for reading the objects and places you encounter long after you return home.

Tokyo—Arrival and First Encounters with Japanese Timekeeping
Settle into a design-forward hotel inside the Ginza or Aoyama districts, where the lobby is like a curated living room rather than a transit point. The evening belongs to your slow absorption: a wander through Ginza, where boutique windows frame everything from precision tools to perfectly folded shirts. This is your first immersion into the culture of Japanese timekeeping. Trains arrive to the second. Bar staff time highballs with ceremony. Hojicha and coal smoke from a yakitori grill carry down Namiki-dori; in a lit window, a white-gloved attendant adjusts a lacquered box, lid slightly ajar, teasing what’s inside.

Zicasso's travel specialist and her team planned an absolutely outstanding 16-day trip for me and my family. We visited Tokyo, Ghibli Park (near Nagoya), Kanazawa, Kyoto (with day trips to Nara and Osaka), and then wrapped things up with two nights at a beautiful and luxurious ryokan in Hakone.
Communication leading up to the trip was clear and efficient, and whenever we had a question during the trip, we were able to get quick answers from our travel company's rep in Japan.
I would absolutely book another trip with this company.

Overall, it was a great trip, with excellent hotels and guides, and great communication. I wish our time were better allocated though. For instance, one day in Tokyo and four days in Kyoto was not balanced. We would have preferred three days in Tokyo and two days in Kyoto. We visited too many shrines and temples, and would've liked more fun activities. But overall, it was good.

Four fellow travelers and I recently completed a customized fall tour in Japan. While there, we traveled from Tokyo to the Fuji, Kyoto, and Kanazawa areas. This was one of several tours organized for me by Zicasso agents. Although they have all been excellent, our agent was the most accommodating in terms of service and special requests.
The Ryokan accommodation she booked for us on Lake Kawaguchiko was out-of-this-world, with a magnificent view of Mount Fuji from our balcony.
She allowed us to leave her tour temporarily to pursue a special interest. She provided us with excellent guides in each region and arranged for them to deliver our group, which was somewhat overwhelmed by the Japanese train system, right to the door of the railway cars and have someone meet us when stepping off at the next location. She organized short-notice requests in terms of ground transport without missing a beat.
Her efficiency and response time while planning the trip were incredible, especially since I was on Canadian time and she on British. I would highly recommend her for her great skill in customizing Zicasso tours to meet your wishes and special needs.

We recently returned from our trip to Japan, which was booked with the tour operator through your platform. We are writing to share that the entire itinerary was exceptionally well designed and executed.
Zicasso’s travel specialist paid meticulous attention to our requirements, including our dietary preferences and specific trip objectives. We stayed four nights at our hotel in Tokyo, where the staff, amenities, and services were excellent. We also spent three nights at our hotel in Kyoto, which provided one of the best boutique hotel experiences we have ever had. The artistic design, location, and level of service were truly outstanding.

We loved working with Zicasso’s travel specialist. He and his team created a seamless, thoughtfully curated trip, with the perfect balance of guided experiences and time to explore.
Every detail felt intentional and each guide was exceptional—knowledgeable, warm, and engaging—which made the entire journey feel personal and effortless. Highlights included our Tokyo tour, hands-on cultural experiences, and our time in Kyoto, which was our favorite city.
Overall, it was a beautifully executed and memorable experience, and we would absolutely work with the tour operator again.

Having had Japan during the cherry blossom season on our bucket list for a very long time, it was important to use the services of an experienced and trustworthy travel agent. Zicasso’s travel specialist not only met, but exceeded our expectations. The icing on the cake included a private traditional tea ceremony, a visit to an out-of-the-way tea plantation, and a remarkable remote temple where we were the only people present. Personal English-speaking guides throughout, including the travel specialist while in Kyoto, made the trip stress-free and fun.
The entire journey of 13 days was packed with lifetime memories. Many thanks. We hope the Dream Catcher ensures you and your wife a lifetime of pleasant dreams.
