Lisbon – Surrounded by Old Glory in Central Lisbon
There is life on the streets of Lisbon as musicians play on corners and along the promenade, whipping up songs for those who will give a tip. Local families hang out on the plazas with kids running around as parents sip on beer or coffee. Old-school trams often rumble past with people hanging from the back of the carriage. The city’s energy is infectious, and it will not take long to convince your kids that this is not going to be a slog around boring sights. Much of the Lisbon experience is all around you, especially during the summer months.
Arrive in Lisbon, and you will be greeted at the airport by your local guide. The airport is only five miles north of the city, and it is a short transfer to Baixa, Lisbon’s spacious central neighborhood. It was decimated by an earthquake in 1755 and then rebuilt with much of Portugal’s wealth. As if defying nature, it is a place of elegant boulevards, majestic statues, gleaming marble facades, and splendid plazas. Most of the boulevards have two lanes for traffic and very wide central reservations in between, so this a great city in which to walk safely without encountering traffic. Baixa is also flat, unlike everywhere else in the city. So it is a little easier to get your family to one of the many restaurants and terraces in the area.
Your guide will provide an orientation at your hotel and will fill you in on good places to dine that are within walking distance. One of these is Time Out Lisbon, a vast food market and first of its kind in the world. Time Out selected Lisbon’s finest restaurants and invited them to run a popup stall in the market, so there is an international section, stalls from four Michelin-starred chefs, and the full sweep of Portuguese cuisine. In short, there is something for everyone, and you still get to dine together.

Detailed Description
Portugal’s energy is infectious as there is a youthful exuberance found along the streets and a positivity to feel on every corner. Portugal feels like a young country, but it is not, and herein lies the beauty of a family vacation in this incredible country. The liveliness is excellent for keeping children entertained, and the beaches are a crowd pleaser for everyone in your family. The fabulous history provides something special to keep everyone engaged, and in a single day, you can live out a castle fairytale, be energized by 300-year-old city streets, then listen to the Fado as traditional cuisine is served. The next day, you can be making castles out of the sand, with a beach afternoon following a morning in a historic city.
Handcrafted for families of all ages, this one-week tour is split across two very different destinations. Lisbon has more sights than anywhere else in Portugal and is the must see when you are looking to maximize your vacation time. After three days here, you can travel south to the coast to stay in a villa on the Algarve coast at Vilamoura. While the landscape changes, there are many constants with the welcoming old cafes ideal for families, small plazas where kids run around as adults sit with a coffee or beer, cobbled streets laced with tiled facades and the enveloping atmosphere of a country that is on the up. The people are friendly as well, even in a big capital city.
Location is everything, both in the city and on the coast. In Lisbon, you will be staying in Baixa, the most central neighborhood for the easiest place to be for walking to local restaurants. Your contemporary city hotel will be followed by three nights in a private family villa, perched above the beach in Vilamoura. From the villa, it will be just a two-minute walk to the beach where the waters are shallow and safe for swimming. It is also only a few minutes to town for everything you will need for the evenings.
Lisbon’s highlights are varied, and your first day is designed to be flexible as you visit a few sights close to your Baixa hotel. The next day, you will head out to Sintra, where castles and palaces will have the kids thinking of nothing but fairytales. Coming back into Lisbon, you will stop in the old resort town of Cascais for your first afternoon on the beach. Restaurants backdrop the sand, and there is a historical atmosphere to go along with the sand. Lisbon is big and hilly, and walking with small children can be a real challenge. So take the tram instead, with number 28 connecting a full variety of Lisbon neighborhoods. You can get off to explore an area with your local guide before trundling onwards for another few stops.
Travel from Lisbon to Faro by train, the journey working out quicker than going by air. Upon arrival, there will be time to explore old Faro with a one-hour walk that will take you around all of the key sights. Your guide will then transfer you to Vilamoura and your villa by the beach, where dramatic cliffs hide caves and coves seen all along this coastline. Explore them the next day, choosing to do so either by boat or by kayak, dependent on how you are feeling and by the ages of your kids. Your last full day is left free, so you can relax on the beach and appreciate the scenery as you and your kids tucked away in beautiful Portugal. We had one of the best trips. We never expected so much attention from any travel agency, from the beginning to departure.

We loved our trip to Spain and Portugal! We enjoyed each of our private tours with our tour guides in the various cities we experienced. They went above and beyond to share their knowledge of the planned sites, plus they added in individual unique sites and information along our walking route.
Zicasso’s tour company took all of our requested activities, venues, and interests to customize a trip that fit us well. They were in communication with us during our trip when a planned site was not available due to construction. Our tour guide provided us with other possible replacement options and let us choose what was of interest to us rather than them making the decision.
We tremendously enjoyed all of the cities, Madrid, Toledo, Granada, and Seville in Spain and Lisbon and Porto in Portugal. Our trip went smoothly and the activities were scheduled at a good pace for us! An extra bonus for us was seeing King Felipe VI by being in the right place at the right time near the opera house in Madrid while we were on our walking tour. We highly recommend Zicasso and the tour company.

Zicasso’s travel specialist was a class act, very responsive and reliable, and able to adjust on the fly when we needed. She was generous and an absolute class act. We asked for a more spacious room for part of the trip and she delivered, and, I believe, paid out of pocket for the upgrade (which we didn't expect and offered to pay). We were needy at times and she handled it all with professionalism and grace. Well done. I highly recommend the travel company!

My husband, our two adult sons, and myself had the pleasure of going to Spain for 11 nights. We didn’t know much about the country, so we relied on Zicasso’s travel specialist to guide us. From the start, she explained the history, culture, food, etc.
We traveled to Madrid, Granada, Seville, Barcelona, and Costa Brava! We also took day trips to Toledo and Córdoba. We had excellent tour guides and drivers. Our trip flowed nicely, as we were on the go a lot of the time.
It was a trip of a lifetime for our family. We looked forward to the tapas, paellas, Jamón Ibérico, gazpacho, empanadas, rabo de toro, and, of course, the seafood every evening. The Spanish people were great and some we’ll never forget!
We learned so much about the ancient and early history, including the Roman conquest through the Medieval and early modern history. We were taking in this information all week, including the Prado Museum, the Picasso Museum, and the Dalí Theatre-Museum!
A simple family moment was sitting on our rooftop in Seville by the pool looking out at this beautiful city, which was difficult to leave!

Our trip to Portugal was outstanding. Zicasso, the tour operator, and our travel specialist were excellent. I worked with our specialist for over a month planning our trip. We did this via email and one phone call. She responded to every change I requested promptly and organized the itinerary to exactly how my wife, Jacki, and I wanted it.
The hotels she picked were excellent. The private drivers we had were always on time and were very friendly and professional. The tour guides she provided were great; very informative on the history of Portugal. The wine tours and city tours were exceptional.
Jacki and I have the utmost gratitude for our specialist's efforts in organizing this vacation. I would rate her a 10 of 10. Her expertise was invaluable, which made our vacation so enjoyable. We experienced so much that we couldn't have done on our own.
