Day 1
Lisbon – Discover the Capital and Uncover Culture
Lisbon is a great warm-up for your legs, a city built on seven hills along the Tagus River. Sidewalks are polished smooth by three centuries of footsteps, and yellow tramcars roll past tiled buildings as narrow alleys open out onto plazas and views above the city. Lisbon is a city where everything is connected, yet every few minutes of walking can bring you to an entirely different neighborhood. This morning you will be collected from the airport for an overnight stay at a small boutique hotel, neatly situated for exploring both the riverside and the most iconic of neighborhoods. Meet your guide for lunch and discuss what will happen over the next week as related to the weather and your surroundings, and take time to clarify anything you may be unsure about so that you can be properly prepared for your adventure.
Throughout the afternoon, you can wander slowly between the colorful parts of Lisbon. Grand 18th-century architecture provides the backdrop in Baixa, the centerpiece of the city’s redevelopment after an earthquake in 1755. Graffiti and blue tiles are just two ways the buildings are painted in Alfama, while in Bairro Alto, the steep pedestrian streets lead you to vintage stores with youthful vibes. Ascend to St. George’s Castle high above the city, and then descend to the riverside promenade where there are various cafes and restaurants to complete your walking tour. This day will be very relaxed, and there are various options for customization as you may want to rest your legs entirely and travel on the famous number 28 tram instead.

Detailed Description
Wild and remote, the sun-drenched Atlantic coastline of Portugal is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Traditional white fishing villages hide beneath the cliffs, palaces emerge above forested hills, lush vineyards are buffeted by the salty ocean breeze, and it is rare that the beaches ever have any footprints at all. The Portuguese coastline is full of tradition, lightly populated by fishing communities for over a thousand years, but never developed like the rest of Europe’s coast making it the perfect setting for a hiking expedition. Listen to the waves as you walk over jumbled rocks, wander out to the very edge of a continent, stroll through welcoming villages, and dip your feet into soft golden sands. The coastline here has few roads, and large parts of it are disconnected from the rest of Portugal so it is only on foot that you can truly explore and uncover a wild landscape as well as a welcoming culture.
Your adventurous hiking expedition begins with a day exploring Lisbon, and then concludes with a free day on a remote beach near Albufeira. The days between bring you on a quintessential adventure as you will hike some of Europe’s finest trails. To hike the entire trail from Lisbon to Sagres would take a few weeks, so this luxury tour handpicks the best sections to give you the full flavor of both the scenic and the cultural diversity. Walk at your own pace, around four to eight miles each day, and mostly in the cooler morning hours. Sections in between each hiking destination are connected by road transfer, and on most days, there will be an optional afternoon hike as well, or you can spend time at a relaxed pace to wander around the many villages.
Spend your first few days of the walk in the UNESCO World Heritage coast and mountain landscape around Sintra. Here you will hike to millennia-old castles, royal palaces, pristine forests, and seaside villages that are as if from a dream. Spend a night in Sintra, and then one in Cascais to hike to the westernmost point of continental Europe in between. The next day of the walk is a celebration of rural Portugal as you traverse the breathtaking landscapes of the Alentejo region. Sample wine in the early 19th-century cellars, follow the windmills towards the coast and then dine on the culinary tradition in a whitewashed village.
The legendary Rota Vicentina is a coastal hiking trail used by fishermen to reach the ultimate fishing spots on Portugal’s wildest stretch of coast. Follow it for a couple of days to cross the cliffs and connect the old villages with an immersion in what is arguably Southern Europe’s most untouched landscape. The final stretch will take you between the lovely beaches, across cliff tops, and to the southwestern tip of the continent, where a lighthouse and fort mark the end of your journey. The beach near Albufeira makes an idyllic little place to rest your legs and reflect on the expedition, while still being surrounded by the whitewashed charms of an old village.
