Detailed Description

Scotland and Ireland aren’t countries that you see. For all the visual beauty and legendary landscapes, these are countries that you experience. It’s not just a stunning lake within a glen; it’s searching for the Loch Ness Monster. A medieval Irish town isn’t just easy on the eye, but stirring to the soul as you walk on the trail of ghosts and go back to the time of Vikings. You don’t simply sit in a cozy traditional pub; you wear a kilt and listen to bagpipes. With so much tradition and culture, these aren’t countries where you sit back and take photographs. They are countries that invite you to get involved: learn about sheepdogs, tasting whiskey and Guinness, hike wild cliffs and Scottish Highlands, swing a club at the home of golf.

Perhaps the most iconic of the experiences concern elements of culture that have been proudly brought forward into the 21st century. Take the Seanchaidhean as an example, storytellers that spin long fanciful tales of Celtic glories and mystical fairies, holding you captive with their craic and their faithful rendition of the past. These aren’t stories you can read in a book; they are tales created through cadence and audience participation, every night is different over many hundreds of years. You’ll experience this storytelling in a three-century-old pub in Dublin, just one example of the immersive insight that’s provided on this handcrafted tour.

Five days in Scotland are followed by a week in Ireland. Fly to Edinburgh, where you climb the castle then walk the Royal Mile. Cross the Scottish countryside and discover the home of golf, along with the ruins of St. Andrew’s cathedral. That night there are bagpipes, and the next day there is whiskey tasting and traditional crannog homesteads. Travel through the Scottish Highlands and choose one of the hiking trails, then learn all about the sheepdog heritage that exists in this beautiful stretch of the world. Day five and you look for the Loch Ness Monster – actually, it’s a sublime boat ride across a legendary lake – as well as searching the soul of various ruined castles.

Fly to Dublin, and there’s a pint of Guinness at the brewery before exploring the city’s literary history, following in the footsteps of James Joyce a great way to experience Dublin’s nooks and crannies. Storytelling takes center stage – after some pre-Celtic history – before you travel south to Kilkenny and learn all about the city’s ghosts. On your final days, you traverse Ireland’s coast, through green fields to the Rock of Cashel, a night of folk tradition, and hiking wild swathes of Atlantic coastline. The Cliffs of Moher are just one highlight, but as always it’s about experiencing not just sightseeing, like when you sit outside a thatched cottage, listening to piped music, dining on local delicacies and chatting with the locals.
