Tromso – Welcome to the Arctic
Tromso lures you in, the City of Lights in the Arctic Circle. Centuries-old wooden houses stretch out beneath the stained-glass windows of the Arctic Cathedral. Mountains provide the unerring backdrop and fjords extend in multiple directions. The setting is majestic and the urban landscape is far livelier than you might expect. There’s a buzz to the streets, especially when lights shine after dark, and the restaurants beckon you in with cozy fires. Land in Tromso and you’re transferred to a hotel on the waterfront, a comfortable base for walking to most of Tromso’s attractions. Settle into the city and see why some call it the Paris of the Arctic, especially the number of superb restaurants to be found close to your hotel. Consider Fjellstua for dinner; the food is good, and the view of the nighttime sky is outstanding.

Detailed Description
Green, purple, and yellow, colors dance through the sky. They swirl and shift like a phantom ballet with grace to every moment. Like the ballet, the nighttime sky has you transfixed. Sometimes it appears that nothing is moving. When you look away the stage has changed, the sky evolving into its next phantom dance. Perhaps nothing in the world is as phantasmagorical, the artistic dance appearing like a dream where the images are real. This is no work of fiction. This is the Arctic Circle. Those that venture north are rewarded with an evening show of lights.
No two nights are the same. In northern Norway and Finland, the aurora plays 150 nights a year. The weeks immediately after the fall equinox, or before the spring equinox are premier times to view the lights. Gases are intensified, and the nighttime sky remains dark. Come earlier or later, and you must stay up late to get a glimpse. Throughout winter you can expect to see the Northern Lights every other night, up to three out of every four nights when the climate is good. Mostly all you need is a clear sky and a good place to watch the show.
This handcrafted aurora borealis tour can’t predict the weather, however, it can give you the best places to experience the northern lights. Tailored for travel from September to April, it offers the three most iconic viewing platforms. Cruise through Norway’s fjords on a Hurtigruten, with cliffs and valleys silhouetted as the gases dance above. Sleep in an ice igloo, where you lay back in warmth and savor the show. Travel through the wilderness on a reindeer sleigh, stopping to view the aurora from frozen lakes and swathes of snowy nothingness.
There’s more to the Arctic Circle than the night sky. When you travel this far north you enter a rare world where nothing is quite as it seems. Tromso is a delightful city on the fjords, backdropped by mountains, and enveloped by snowy landscapes through winter. Spend two nights on the Hurtigruten cruise, stopping at the North Cape Plateau, where 250,000 seabirds show that there is great life in the Arctic. Pass sacred rocks and have a chance to meet the Sami, travel through immense fjords, and discover the colorful fishing villages that dot Norway’s coast.
Disembark in Kirkenes and go hunting for Arctic king crab, learning how to catch them through a hole in the ice. Travel onwards by snowmobile sleigh and spend the night in a snow igloo, where it’s much warmer than you think yet just as inimitable as it sounds. Appreciate the wilderness as you cross into Finland and two nights in a glass igloo, a wonderfully comfortable place for watching the sky. You will head out on a husky safari to track the aurora. With six nights in the Arctic Circle, you should witness the aurora on multiple occasions.

Zicasso’s travel specialist was our trip advisor and planner for a family trip to Stockholm and Norway, including a two-day stay in Tromsø chasing the Northern Lights. Although the Northern Lights did not appear for us, their absence did not dim our experiences, as organized for us.
She spent time and energy listening to what we wanted to hear from guides, as well as what we wanted to experience in each city we visited on our own. Equally important, she understood our budget and stayed within its limits.
Her suggestions for restaurants, her travel tips on clothing, her knowledge of the culture, her selection of private guides, and her careful listening to our needs made all the difference between a good trip and an excellent one. For example, I have an extreme shellfish allergy and every restaurant where she made reservations for us knew of that allergy before we walked in.
I cannot recommend her more highly. It was a privilege to work with her.

It was a fantastic trip! We had enough to do in every location, but still enough free time to explore on our own. I do wish we had been given a bit more detail on some of the tours; we were surprised a few times. It did not negatively impact us, but it would have been nice to be more prepared.

The trip was AMAZING! Lapland, and our resort in particular, was beautiful. We never thought we'd enjoy the cold and snow as much as we did. To start, the cabin was great. Small, but who spends time in the room? Being able to see the aurora borealis lying in bed and looking up was spectacular. The entire property was pristine and gorgeous. There was so much to do and we tried to do most of it.
We did the sauna, with a cold plunge in the frozen lake, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, reindeer feeding, dogsledding, aurora hunting (right before we got in the van to go look for the aurora, it showed up right over our heads at the resort), snowmobiling, and ice cart racing. Every activity went smoothly and the activities staff and guides were all incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. We had such a great time!
The food... wow! We had food that we wouldn't normally eat and all of it was terrific. The wait staff were friendly and quick. The front desk never tired of our questions (we asked a lot) and was super-helpful. Everything we needed was provided, including really warm and new snow suits and boots (very necessary), and even snowshoes at the cabin itself. If we wanted to cross-country ski, the skis were available any time, at no charge. There were even places to hike or snowshoe to where there was a lean-to and fire pit, and they even provided the wood, matches, and fire starter. There was nothing we could ask for that wasn't already provided.
Even though it was a long trip from the United States, and we like to travel to different places, I think we may return to this resort again.
We would absolutely use Zicasso's travel specialist again. Our travel specialist was really helpful in setting up this trip. We knew almost nothing about Lapland and Finland in general. She walked us through planning the trip, asked poignant questions (steered us away from the tourist traps), and gave great advice. Recommending our resort was perfect. Also, we changed the plans a few times (flights, whether to take a day in Helsinki, etc.) and she flexed with us easily. Even the details, like scheduling our activities and setting up dinner reservations, were taken care of, with little effort on our part. Thank you so much for the trip of a lifetime!

Zicasso’s travel agent and I discussed what I wanted to see and experience on a trip to Norway. She presented me with a very detailed itinerary that, indeed, included everything on my list. All of the pick-ups, transfers (luggage and people), and tours were seamless. The tours she set up for us were either private or with very small groups, which, for the amount of money we were spending, seemed appropriate.
When there were any changes in our itinerary once we were on the road, she communicated promptly and resolved any potential issues in advance for us. She also checked in at various times along the way to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. I felt that we were in professional and capable hands the whole time.
This was the second time we have enlisted Zicasso to create a memorable vacation for us. Each of these big annual trips has been literally a "trip of a lifetime" for us. Thank you to Zicasso for connecting us to our travel agent!

Our Scandinavian trip was so fantastic that I wish I could give Zicasso's travel agency and our agent 100 stars!!! Even that would not be enough. Everything was perfect, from transportation to hotels to excursions to tour guides, etc.
While planning the trip, our agent listened to my desires and made them a reality. Her suggestions were wonderful and we incorporated many. The agency also uses an app and this was invaluable as we traveled along.
Thank you, thank you to Zicasso for having this agency on their list and thank you to our agency for helping plan a perfect trip to Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. You are the best.

We had a magnificent trip. Zicasso's travel designer did a fabulous job; she listened to our desires and developed an ideal itinerary. From the accommodations, guides, and seamless transfers to the "inside" tips from her experiences, it was a definite first-class experience.
Almost equally impressive was how she was able to make a few very last-minute adjustments to our itinerary without issue. We highly recommend the travel company and our travel designer in particular if you are considering travel to this very beautiful and unique part of the world.
