First Sands
Fiji is an archipelago made as much from idyllic dreams as from the natural splendor of a mixture of tropical rainforest and opulent South Pacific waters. Arrive at the Nadi International Airport on the large island of Viti Levu. Your private transfer is waiting for you and quickly takes you to your resort located on the nearby islet of Denarau Island. The breeze blows softly carrying the aroma of fresh coconut. The tall grasses sway across the hillsides into the distance, until fern trees and dense rainforest overtake the grassland.
Sugar cane plantations date back to the British colonial days and spread across the island’s northern rim, past Mount Koroyanitu, standing at 3,943 feet above sea level and draped in lush jungle. You hear the waters of the Pacific lap at the shores of Denarau Island. Your hotel contains a serene mixture of traditional style décor and contemporary luxuries to make you sink into comfort. Palm trees line the beach, adding shade to the poolside cabanas. Dip your toes into the ocean to feel the refreshingly temperate waters brushing against the silky sand. Traditional music filters through the lobby. People greet you with large, pearly smiles. There is no easier place to put up your feet and relax.

New Zealand is known for its magnificent mountains, verdant rolling hills, tremendous glaciers, and also incredibly friendly people. On this 9-day Fiji and New Zealand South Island express tour you will experience the beauty of both countries, taking you along sand, snow, multiple types of forests, and tropical islands and majestic glaciers. Your Southern Hemisphere exploration begins on one of Zicasso's vacations to Fiji with your arrival at the Nadi International Airport in Viti Levu, Fiji.
Your private transfer escorts you to Denarau Island where the rest of the day is at your leisure to enjoy the resort facilities and the surrounding grandeur. The following day you can venture out on a catamaran to explore the nearby Mamanuca Islands, filling your day with temperate turquoise water, tropical islands, and vivacious coral reefs. A private transfer meets you the next day to escort you back to the airport for your flight to Queenstown, New Zealand. The resort style city is situated in the Southern Alps and always brimming with activity no matter the season.
Spend a day enjoying the mountain air, ride the gondola up to Bob’s Peak, absorbing the luscious aroma of Douglas fir and beech trees, and hiking around the mountainsides. Venture southbound on an exciting day trip to cruise the mesmeric waters of Milford Sound. The following day you depart from Queenstown, venturing through Wanaka near Shotover River, passing Lake Hawea, and taveling through Haast Pass. Visit the marvelous Monro Beach to see the Fiordland Crested Penguin colony and witness the incredible expanse of Fox Glacier en route to Franz Josef.
Indulge in a full day tour of Franz Josef Glacier, exploring the depths of natural ice tunnels and the definitive crevices shaped by the shifting ice. Travel the short distance to Greymouth to board the splendid TranzAlpine train. The tracks lead through the mountains, along the Canterbury plains until arriving in Christchurch, the Garden City. We had a great trip! All the logistics and connections were spot-on. If I had it to plan again, I would incorporate fewer long drives and possibly take one or two short flights. We had three days of actual driving five-plus hours, which turned into six to seven hours with stops.
Highlights included the Christchurch tour, the Around the Basin bike tour in Queenstown, the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, biking around Lake Tekapō, as well as Kaikōura, and the glowworm caves in Te Anau. The TranzAlpine train was enjoyable. However, the mountain scenery encountered was not as dramatic as that seen in the more southern areas.
Unfortunately, our helicopter ride to the glaciers in Franz Josef was rained out. Our days in Queenstown were muted with fog, so both the gondola dinner experience, as well as the dinner cruise on Lake Wakatipu, were somewhat compromised. Both activities involved large buffets, with mediocre food and lots of tourists.
We enjoyed the Fiordland jet-boat ride and the biking back option. I felt the portion on the water was a bit light on the 360 turns and heavy on the nature focus. The Dark Sky experience was a disappointment, as wind conditions only allowed our group to go to the crater, not the observatory. Add to that a very bright, near-full moon and the conditions were not ideal for viewing.
After that late-night experience, the next day we drove to Lake Tekapō (with stops, six to seven hours). Between the time in the car and a developing hip issue that could compromise the required hiking, we decided not to drive one-and-a-half hours the next morning to Mount Cook for the Tasman Glacier tour.
Kaikōura is an attractive, quiet coastal town that was a nice final stop on our itinerary. We rented bikes and traversed the Peninsula Trail, including the seal colony.
All of our accommodations were in line with the parameters that we gave Zicasso’s travel specialist regarding location, ratings, and features. We especially enjoyed our hotel in Christchurch, our hotel in Te Anau, and our inn in Kaikōura. The motel in Lake Tekapō was the most dated property; however, the location was fabulous.
Again, we had a wonderful trip and I have already recommended this travel company to our friends, who are booked later this year.
