Tanjung Puting – The Beginnings of an Eco-Adventure

From the plane, you can look down and see the snaking figure of the Sekonyer River rushing against the edges of the city of Pangkalan Bun. Homes rise out of the banks on stilts accounting for the rising waters during months of tropical rain. A boardwalk runs along the banks, allowing visitors and locals to enjoy views of the rushing river and life alongside the water. Colorful boats use the current to speed across town, and larger vessels transport goods downstream. Your private transfer meets you upon your flight's arrival at Iskandar Airport. The tropical warmth greets you outside the airport doors, set amidst the bustling city.

You venture to the Kumai Harbor with a quick introduction into the thriving river life circulating along the riverbank. Canoes and large fishing boats moor in the harbor, highlighting the importance of river life to central Borneo. You board a comfortable klotok, a traditional Indonesian riverboat consisting of a shallow draft measuring an average of 33 feet long. You follow the waters of a small tributary connected to the Kumai River. The bustling movement of the harbor fades to serene jungle surroundings. The scent of freshwater blends with the aroma of fresh wood drifting upwards from the boat.

The skipper explains there are over 230 types of birds in the Tanjung Putting National Park, an area encompassing more than 1,600 square miles. You can hear the echoing twitter of colorful kingfisher roaming the riverbanks. The skipper points to a false gharial basking in the sunlight on the shoreline. The freshwater crocodile can grow to nearly 13 feet long. The journey up the winding tributary feels like something out of an adventure book. You arrive at the stunning eco-friendly lodge and settle into the comforts of your room overlooking the gentle flow of the Sekonyer River.

Indonesia, Thailand Travel Review: Komodo Dragons, Tigers, Elephants, Temples, 2 Weeks

Zicasso’s travel planner and her team were excellent to work with. They handled all of our requests, gave us great guides, and made sure we were met at the airport. We never had to worry about where to go or when to meet. The guides did it all.

The three hotels were wonderful, although the one in Bali had a lot of steps, so do be specific if you can't handle going up and down steps easily.

I had three massages during the trip, all wonderful as well.

The boat in Komodo was not quite what we expected. The crew was great and gave us way too much food, and the guide was terrific. The boat was kind of old and the "en suite" bathroom left a lot to be desired. Also, if you are over six feet tall, like my husband, this is not the best boat to be on.

We had a blast at the tiger and elephant sanctuaries, and seeing the dragons at Komodo National Park.

We paid for our visas and such ahead of time, so getting into Bali was a breeze. I have to admit, we saw a lot of temples, but I guess that is what Thailand and Bali are all about!

Indonesia Trip Review: Yogyakarta, Ubud, Temples, Snorkeling, Wildlife, 2-Week Tour

Zicasso's travel agent did a wonderful job of arranging seamless, complex transfers from Java to Gili Air to Ubud, Bali, and provided great guides, drivers, and advice, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot and local currency on arrival. We did have an issue with hotels not reserved until a couple of days ahead and he promptly resolved the problem.

Our agent was a very responsive and prompt communicator. We would recommend!

Indonesia Tour Review: Snorkeling, Eco-Lodge, Balinese Dancing, 12 Nights

I travelled with my son Marshall and had a great time. There was a lot of time sitting in airports, but that was the fastest way to get around Indonesia to do all of the things that we wanted to do. We had to go to so many islands! The guides at each stop were fantastic. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and punctual. They also suggested good alternatives to the places we visited that gave us the same experience, with the added plus of not being where there were a lot of tourists.

Indonesia Vacation Review: Bali, Jungle, Elephant Sanctuary, Wildlife, Boat Trip, E-Biking, Rice Paddies, ATV, Canyoning, Rappelling, Cliff Jumping, 2 Weeks

Our trip to a Bali was simply amazing and it could not have been better. I contacted three agencies about Bali a few years ago, but we didn’t end up going at that time. When we started to plan our Bali trip this year, we contacted Zicasso's tour company because they had been the most helpful the first time around.

Indonesia Family Tour Review: Bali, Yogyakarta, Flores, Sumba, Temples, Wildlife, 18 Days

We had a spectacular time making memories with our family in Indonesia. The Zicasso tour agency's team was considerate, caring, accommodating, and well-organized. Their attention to detail, consideration, and anticipation of issues were unparalleled. We were out of the country and they still made sure we got the best service from the craftsman we ordered from. Our family will have lasting memories of this special time. We are looking forward to booking another trip with them.

Indonesia Tour Review: Bali, Kubu, Scuba Diving, Surfing, Boat Ride, Wildlife, 2-Week Trip

Zicasso’s travel specialist and his team were nothing short of amazing. First, planning the trip with him was a pleasure. We had multiple calls and Zoom meetings to refine and discuss our proposed itinerary. His knowledge of the area was invaluable as we made these decisions. After booking, his communication was superb. For example, we wanted to add a private boat day, scuba diving, and surf lessons. He helped us each and every step of the way. When we struggled with the website for visas, his team immediately stepped in and filled everything out for us and sent us the visas. Upon arrival late in the evening, he met us at the airport. This became a pattern as we moved all over Bali. As soon as we would emerge from our private, limo-like vehicle, he would be standing there with a handshake. He was available 24 hours a day during our entire trip. A simple text message to him would get me dinner reservations, late checkout, or early check-in at hotels, etc.

The hotels he selected were spectacular, and the rooms we received were often more of our own compound than a hotel room. Two places we stayed had multiple buildings as our accommodations.

The guides he hired for us were immediately like family members and our driver (who was with us for our entire two-week stay) was really good. Bali has some of the narrowest streets I've ever seen and he piloted our car with extreme skill. By the way, everyone spoke English like it was their first language.

The last detail I'll include (I could go on for pages and pages) was that the travel specialist provided us with a WiFi hotspot with unlimited data for our use during our entire stay, which proved invaluable.

We can't wait to return to Bali and we will definitely use this travel company again.
