Kauri Cliffs – Helicopter to the Northland
As you fly north, the landscape will blur into deep blue tones because this piece of New Zealand is dominated by the South Pacific Ocean. It is remote and wild out here, and, other than some famous kauri trees and Ninety Mile Beach, this area is not typically visited by international visitors. After landing at Auckland International Airport, you will be met by a guide and transferred to the helicopter for a short flight north. You will touch down near the Kauri Cliffs and check-in to your lodge that will be located on vast, private grounds. You may want to hideaway here for part of the afternoon, but you should definitely indulge in a stroll along the cliffs to three secluded Bay of Island beaches.

Detailed Description
Wilderness and indulgence are two words that perfectly describe most experiences on New Zealand’s North Island. This is a landscape that allows you to sit in the lap of luxury throughout your entire journey. You will have a helicopter landing on an active volcano, sail through the Bay of Islands, and wander across the Pacific Kauri Cliffs. There is an adventure every way you turn from remote backcountry to coastlines of solitude. Then, there is the indulgence that can be found in places that are designed just for you. You can relax at lodges that are cut off from the world, taste wine at bucolic farms, lounge in private spas, and wallow in the island’s serenity.
This handcrafted, New Zealand tour stays well clear of crowds and popular destinations, and it will lead you to the North Island’s hidden places, such as the Kauri Cliffs and Palliser Bay. Instead of cities and tourist attractions, you can walk hand-in-hand in the places where very few others venture. Exclusive experiences, such as a Maori welcoming on Mt. Titiraupenga, will aid your understanding of how this island really is while romantic stops at vineyards and beaches can provide your vacation with a feeling of familiarity. Most of the transfers will be by helicopter, and you will stay in remote destinations that lay off the road.
After flying to Auckland, you will travel by helicopter to four nights on the Kauri Cliffs. This remote, coastal destination is all about Pacific bliss and tranquility. You will helicopter around the Bay of Islands and connect with the country’s heritage before a full day of private sailing around the bay. A Maori experience in Northland showcases the intimacy of this ancient landscape while the Kauri Cliffs lodge creates the sense of being cut off from the world. You will swap the coast for a volcanic interior on day five, and you will spend four nights on an enormous private reserve near Taupo, where the backcountry becomes your back garden and volcanos pockmark the landscape.
You will take a helicopter to White Island and Mt. Tarawera on day six, which is where you can stroll across an active volcano and feel the power of nature. Exclusive access to Mt. Titiraupenga has been arranged for day seven, and here, you will be welcomed by Maori warriors and given access to a sacred place that will allow you to connect with the island’s heritage. Palliser Bay will be your final destination, and it is another place of coastal indulgence. Here, you will visit the Martinborough wineries, get your hands dirty on a Wharekauhau farm, and relax back at your lodge spa.

We had a great trip! All the logistics and connections were spot-on. If I had it to plan again, I would incorporate fewer long drives and possibly take one or two short flights. We had three days of actual driving five-plus hours, which turned into six to seven hours with stops.
Highlights included the Christchurch tour, the Around the Basin bike tour in Queenstown, the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, biking around Lake Tekapō, as well as Kaikōura, and the glowworm caves in Te Anau. The TranzAlpine train was enjoyable. However, the mountain scenery encountered was not as dramatic as that seen in the more southern areas.
Unfortunately, our helicopter ride to the glaciers in Franz Josef was rained out. Our days in Queenstown were muted with fog, so both the gondola dinner experience, as well as the dinner cruise on Lake Wakatipu, were somewhat compromised. Both activities involved large buffets, with mediocre food and lots of tourists.
We enjoyed the Fiordland jet-boat ride and the biking back option. I felt the portion on the water was a bit light on the 360 turns and heavy on the nature focus. The Dark Sky experience was a disappointment, as wind conditions only allowed our group to go to the crater, not the observatory. Add to that a very bright, near-full moon and the conditions were not ideal for viewing.
After that late-night experience, the next day we drove to Lake Tekapō (with stops, six to seven hours). Between the time in the car and a developing hip issue that could compromise the required hiking, we decided not to drive one-and-a-half hours the next morning to Mount Cook for the Tasman Glacier tour.
Kaikōura is an attractive, quiet coastal town that was a nice final stop on our itinerary. We rented bikes and traversed the Peninsula Trail, including the seal colony.
All of our accommodations were in line with the parameters that we gave Zicasso’s travel specialist regarding location, ratings, and features. We especially enjoyed our hotel in Christchurch, our hotel in Te Anau, and our inn in Kaikōura. The motel in Lake Tekapō was the most dated property; however, the location was fabulous.
Again, we had a wonderful trip and I have already recommended this travel company to our friends, who are booked later this year.

Zicasso’s travel agent was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was so patient with us as we designed our perfect itinerary and helped us choose between all the fabulous places to go and things to do and see.
Before leaving on the trip, she gave us access to an app with our itinerary and links to our vouchers, so we had all of our information in one place. We found the app incredibly helpful throughout our trip. During our trip, she was accessible by phone and text to answer questions and lend her expertise.
