Rome – Arrive in Rome with an Introductory Tour of the Historical Streets

Rome is a city of unbridled majesty that emanates from the shores of the Tiber River and the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The end of the 15th century saw the flourishing of art and architecture based on the virtues of the past. Your flight will land at Rome Fiumicino Airport as your private transfer will meet you at baggage claim and escort you to the heart of the Eternal City at a hotel that overlooks the stunning Piazza della Repubblica. The natural spring waters once fed the Diocletian Baths on the opposite edge of the piazza, and the baths were so large that today they contain two churches, along with segments of a Carthusian monastery.

Renaissance master Michelangelo repurposed the former hot baths as the shell to house Santa Maria degli Angeli in the 16th century. The voluminous interior contains vaulted ceilings behind a simple entrance set inside a covered apse. Michelangelo had to raise the ground floor to the street level more than 90 feet with red granite flanked by Roman columns. Your guide will lead you along the cobblestones of the historical city center to reach the stunning figures of the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona. Renaissance palaces frame the piazza accentuate the marvelous details of the 17th century Fountain of the Four Rivers, a work of art erected upon the request of Pope Innocent X. In Rome, the beauty of history rises out of the open spaces and hides behind the grace of villa facades.

Detailed Description

The ancient world inspired the Renaissance with parables of deities and attention to the beauty of the human figure. Science, philosophy, and architecture informed the artwork of the Renaissance, causing a rebirth of delicate features and human touches in works that stretched from Rome to Milan. Your 8-day art adventure follows the Renaissance around central and northern Italy, taking you to Rome, Florence, Ferrara, Padua, and Milan. Whether an art lover or amateur painter, artistic novice or simply an Italian enthusiast, your exploration of one of Italy’s most famous historical periods will have you cherishing your time spent among radiant paintings and opulent palaces.

Your tour will begin upon your arrival at Fiumicino Airport in Rome. Meet your private transfer at baggage claim before you venture into the historical city center of Rome. Your introductory tour will lead you to the ancient Diocletian baths near Piazza della Repubblica, home to a stunning church designed by Michelangelo. The tour continues along the Baroque palaces and streets of which the Renaissance inspired. The next day, you will enjoy an immersive tour of the Renaissance works housed in the Vatican Museums and Vatican City, whether inside St. Peter’s Square or frescoes painted by Raphael. In the afternoon, you will stroll through the halls of the Palazzo Farnese to view the lavish décor and stunning paintings embellishing the interior, including a stunning fresco decorating the ceiling in the main gallery.

The next day, your private guide will take you back in time to Ancient Rome, highlighting how the images and myths of the past helped usher in the enlightened age of the Renaissance. In the afternoon, you will connect ancient life to the captivating artwork of the Renaissance by visiting Villa Borghese. You will then leave the Eternal City of Rome behind the following day and make your way to Florence, the “Cradle of the Renaissance.” Your first tour of the city will lead you along the cobbled streets that crisscross the elegant palaces, beautiful churches, and incredible artwork set in the open-air for passersby to view. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to wander the heart of the Tuscan city.

Witness the absorbing majesty of the world’s largest collection of Renaissance artwork the next morning when touring the Uffizi Gallery. Follow the secret passage of the Vasari Corridor across the Arno River and enjoy a view of the city from atop the dome of the Cathedral. Continue as you head towards Milan, stopping en route in the Renaissance city of Ferrara, a town that once rivaled Florence in prestige, power, and beauty. Explore the architecture and artwork, along with the stunning Este Castle before continuing to Padua.

The streets and piazzas of Padua emanate Renaissance design, but the true treasure of the city is the Scrovegni Chapel, which Giotto decorated. You will arrive in Milan in the evening and relax with a dinner along the Naviglio Canal. The next morning, you will visit the remarkable Renaissance collection at the Pinacoteca di Brera Museum before entering the breathtaking gallery housing da Vinci’s Last Supper inside the church of Santa Maria della Grazie. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to enjoy the beauty and contemporary culture of Milan. Your private transfer will meet you at your hotel the last day and escort you to Milan’s Malpensa Airport for your flight home.

Italy Tour Review: Pompeii, Amalfi Coast, Florence, 12 Nights

Zicasso’s travel company and every single guide and driver were stellar. All four hotels were good or excellent. There was one error on the schedule for the day outside of Florence when we had a driver to take us to the Siena region. The schedule stated three hours, so we paid for tickets to the Pitti Palace/garden, which turned out to be wasted money as the driving tour was actually nine hours. It was a beautiful day, though.

Italy Vacation Review: Le Marne, Art Tour, Museums, 9 Days

It was well organized and met my needs completely. The guides and drivers (except for the one to the airport on 6/23) were great. I was particularly surprised and pleased by the art tour on 6/22.

Italy Travel Review: Venice, Cinque Terre, Pisa, Florence, Impruneta, Rome, St. Mark's Basilica, Vatican, Cooking Class, Winery Tour, Art, 9-Day Trip

The trip was awesome. The accommodations were very nice. We just did not realize how much walking we would do, but we managed. There were a few hiccups, but nothing major.

Our transport from the airport to the hotel in Venice went smoothly. We definitely appreciated the private transfer after seeing the crowd on the public transportation. My sister was a little disappointed that the gondolier did not sing to us in Italian, but she thought the ride was very relaxing. The tour guide for St. Mark's was very knowledgeable and informative. Venice was a lovely and unique city. We were surprised by the narrow walkways/streets and canals; but came to appreciate them. It gave Venice its charm. The transport from the hotel to the train station was right on time and the guy at the train station was great. He explained exactly what we needed to do to catch the train to our next destinations. We really appreciated his help.

The transport from the train station to the car rental agency was okay. The driver spoke little English and the A/C did not work in the vehicle. The driver did try everything to work the A/C and did apologize that it was not working. The driver dropped us off at the wrong spot at the rental car place. He dropped us off where you turn in the cars.  We had to walk to where you rent the cars with our luggage. The car-rental line was extremely long and somewhat confusing. There were no instructions to take a number. We only knew because a nice couple informed us to do so. And there were so many other car-rental places with no lines.

We explored Cinque Terre, Pisa, and Florence during our time in Impruneta. We really enjoyed the cooking class and winery tour you scheduled for us; our guide was a great teacher. Driving in Florence was a little confusing with the ZTLs, but I think we did okay. Little did we know how much we would appreciate the ZTLs while walking around in Florence. We walked and shopped in Florence. We even did a tour at the Accademia Gallery to see the statue of David.

Returning the vehicle was way easier than renting it and our next transport picked us up right where we were dropped off. We felt very comfortable navigating the train station for our train ride to Rome, thanks to the train station lesson we received from the guy in Venice. The train rides went very smoothly. The transport from the station in Rome to our hotel went very well. He literally dropped us off right in front of the hotel.

Rome was different. It had the narrow, quaint streets between buildings which made Rome very walkable. However, we did not expect cars/motorcycles to be driving down these narrow streets as well. It made for interesting walks. We really enjoyed our tours with our guide. She was very knowledgeable and informative. She also allowed us to go at our own pace. Needless to say, our pace became slower than usual from all the walking we already did in Venice and Florence. Our feet were starting to hurt, even though we wore comfortable shoes the whole time. We also enjoyed the Vatican Necropolis. I was extremely humbled that I was able to kneel and pray before the actual remains of St. Peter. I am very grateful we were allowed to get into that tour. Although Rome was different, it was very historical and a lot to take in. There was just so much history everywhere you turned. Rome was really inspiring.

Our transport from the hotel back to the airport was on time and went very well. The driver spoke very good English and gave us some additional interesting facts while on our way to the airport. We were ready to go home, but also sad to be leaving.

Thank you for putting the details of the trip together. The trip would not have been as great as it was without you.

Italy Tour Review: Florence, Cinque Terre, Capri, Boat Ride, 2-Week Trip

Our Zicasso travel agent did a great job planning and executing our two-week tour of Italy. Transfers were seamless and guides were knowledgeable and experienced. We particularly loved Florence, our hotel, its staff, and its walkable location to so many sites. We loved the guide in Cinque Terre; he knew the area, specifically a restaurant where we were away from the crowds. Thanks to the travel agent for a job well done.

Italy Tour Review: Amalfi Coast, Ravello, Positano, Florence, Rome, Siena, Winery Visit, 11 Nights

Overall, the trip was perfect! The hotels were really nice and the itinerary was great.

A few things I would have changed. First, the Amalfi tour day. There was not enough time in Ravello or Positano. We needed more time to relax and shop.

The class of train could have been nicer for the Florence-to-Rome portion of the trip.

We've been to many wineries throughout Europe and the one we went to on our way to Siena was okay, but we have been to much nicer wineries, with better wine and food tastings. It was not a great wine tour experience.

Everything else was wonderful and we really enjoyed the trip with our sons!!!

Thank you!

Italy Travel Review: Florence, Siena, 10 Nights

The trip planning was flexible and Zicasso's travel company adapted to changes in our itinerary. We originally planned to go to the Amalfi Coast, but switched to Florence, and they did a very good job of accommodating our request.

The planning was well done. All tour tickets, transportation, and hotels were as described, and the concierge service was helpful.
