Day 1

Helsinki – Arrive in Helsinki, Finland with the Remaining Day at Leisure

The architecture of Helsinki rises above the lapping water along the Baltic Sea and overlooks inlets and islands with grand contemporary designs. The winter frost reflects the light from the classic Art Nouveau train station that was built in 1919. The aromas of roasted snow grouse fade beneath the sweet scent of lingonberry sauces and wild herbs that emanates from local restaurants. Helsinki retains a sense of maritime ambiance amid the mixture of Eastern European, Russian, and Scandinavian style. The city wraps to the contours of the water and the feeling of 20th-century independence with a youthful energy that courses through the boulevards and emanates from the outdoor cafes.

Your private transfer will greet you at Helsinki Airport and escort you to a gorgeous hotel tucked away into a cozy corner of the city inside a 1930s Art Deco interior. The remainder of the day will be yours to enjoy Helsinki at your leisure. The city is known as Christmas City, with no better place for you to experience the winter wonderland before you visit Finland’s famous Lapland. In winter, homemade ornaments decorate the shop windows made by independent artists. Families and couples twirl around the numerous ice rinks across the city and the aroma of mulled wine with bits of almond for good luck provides extra warmth accompanied by gingerbread cookies in the bustling Christmas markets.

Norway Travel Review: Alta, Northern Lights, Fjord Cruise, Husky Safari, 10 Days

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Scandinavia. It was everything we’d hoped for and more!

The hotels were all well located and the star of the trip was our boutique lodge in Alta, Norway. The attentive staff, the food… everything was exceptional! They worked non-stop trying to make our stay the best it could be. As a primary motivation for the trip was to see the Northern Lights, the ease of this in this unique setting was wonderful. We only had to step outside of our cabin to check whether the lights were active or not. No hours-long excursion to escape light pollution was necessary as it is in other destinations.

The excursions we did partake in—the fjord cruise, the husky safari, and a tour of the igloo hotel—were also well run and very enjoyable. Zicasso’s travel specialist hit it out of the park!

Finland, Germany Trip Review: 2 Weeks

It was a fantastic trip! We had enough to do in every location, but still enough free time to explore on our own. I do wish we had been given a bit more detail on some of the tours; we were surprised a few times. It did not negatively impact us, but it would have been nice to be more prepared.

Finland Travel Review: Lapland, Aurora Borealis, Dog Sledding, Reindeer Feeding, Snowmobiling, Sauna Experience, 1 Week

The trip was AMAZING! Lapland, and our resort in particular, was beautiful. We never thought we'd enjoy the cold and snow as much as we did. To start, the cabin was great. Small, but who spends time in the room? Being able to see the aurora borealis lying in bed and looking up was spectacular. The entire property was pristine and gorgeous. There was so much to do and we tried to do most of it.

We did the sauna, with a cold plunge in the frozen lake, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, reindeer feeding, dogsledding, aurora hunting (right before we got in the van to go look for the aurora, it showed up right over our heads at the resort), snowmobiling, and ice cart racing. Every activity went smoothly and the activities staff and guides were all incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. We had such a great time!

The food... wow! We had food that we wouldn't normally eat and all of it was terrific. The wait staff were friendly and quick. The front desk never tired of our questions (we asked a lot) and was super-helpful. Everything we needed was provided, including really warm and new snow suits and boots (very necessary), and even snowshoes at the cabin itself. If we wanted to cross-country ski, the skis were available any time, at no charge. There were even places to hike or snowshoe to where there was a lean-to and fire pit, and they even provided the wood, matches, and fire starter. There was nothing we could ask for that wasn't already provided.

Even though it was a long trip from the United States, and we like to travel to different places, I think we may return to this resort again.

We would absolutely use Zicasso's travel specialist again. Our travel specialist was really helpful in setting up this trip. We knew almost nothing about Lapland and Finland in general. She walked us through planning the trip, asked poignant questions (steered us away from the tourist traps), and gave great advice. Recommending our resort was perfect. Also, we changed the plans a few times (flights, whether to take a day in Helsinki, etc.) and she flexed with us easily. Even the details, like scheduling our activities and setting up dinner reservations, were taken care of, with little effort on our part. Thank you so much for the trip of a lifetime!
