Day 1

Kauri Cliffs – Helicopter to the Northland

As you fly north, the landscape will blur into deep blue tones because this piece of New Zealand is dominated by the South Pacific Ocean. It is remote and wild out here, and, other than some famous kauri trees and Ninety Mile Beach, this area is not typically visited by international visitors. After landing at Auckland International Airport, you will be met by a guide and transferred to the helicopter for a short flight north. You will touch down near the Kauri Cliffs and check-in to your lodge that will be located on vast, private grounds. You may want to hideaway here for part of the afternoon, but you should definitely indulge in a stroll along the cliffs to three secluded Bay of Island beaches.

Detailed Description

Wilderness and indulgence are two words that perfectly describe most experiences on New Zealand’s North Island. This is a landscape that allows you to sit in the lap of luxury throughout your entire journey. You will have a helicopter landing on an active volcano, sail through the Bay of Islands, and wander across the Pacific Kauri Cliffs. There is an adventure every way you turn from remote backcountry to coastlines of solitude. Then, there is the indulgence that can be found in places that are designed just for you. You can relax at lodges that are cut off from the world, taste wine at bucolic farms, lounge in private spas, and wallow in the island’s serenity.

This handcrafted, New Zealand tour stays well clear of crowds and popular destinations, and it will lead you to the North Island’s hidden places, such as the Kauri Cliffs and Palliser Bay. Instead of cities and tourist attractions, you can walk hand-in-hand in the places where very few others venture. Exclusive experiences, such as a Maori welcoming on Mt. Titiraupenga, will aid your understanding of how this island really is while romantic stops at vineyards and beaches can provide your vacation with a feeling of familiarity. Most of the transfers will be by helicopter, and you will stay in remote destinations that lay off the road.

After flying to Auckland, you will travel by helicopter to four nights on the Kauri Cliffs. This remote, coastal destination is all about Pacific bliss and tranquility. You will helicopter around the Bay of Islands and connect with the country’s heritage before a full day of private sailing around the bay. A Maori experience in Northland showcases the intimacy of this ancient landscape while the Kauri Cliffs lodge creates the sense of being cut off from the world. You will swap the coast for a volcanic interior on day five, and you will spend four nights on an enormous private reserve near Taupo, where the backcountry becomes your back garden and volcanos pockmark the landscape.

You will take a helicopter to White Island and Mt. Tarawera on day six, which is where you can stroll across an active volcano and feel the power of nature. Exclusive access to Mt. Titiraupenga has been arranged for day seven, and here, you will be welcomed by Maori warriors and given access to a sacred place that will allow you to connect with the island’s heritage. Palliser Bay will be your final destination, and it is another place of coastal indulgence. Here, you will visit the Martinborough wineries, get your hands dirty on a Wharekauhau farm, and relax back at your lodge spa.

New Zealand Trip Review: Milford Sound, Franz Josef, 2 Weeks

Zicasso’s travel agent did a great job setting up our itinerary to meet our wants and adjusted it as we requested. They also selected excellent hotel locations, with most of them being walkable to our activities or nearby dinner spots.

New Zealand Family Vacation Review: Nelson, Queen Charlotte Sound, Rotorua, Queenstown, Dolphin Watching, Glowworm Caves, 2-Week Trip

This was a three-generation trip. Our objective was to fully engage our two grandsons (ages 10 and 8) for a winter break trip that included learning about the history and culture of New Zealand, including the Māori people, the local plants and animals, rugby, and having a number of fun activities as well, while keeping the adults interested.

Zicasso’s travel agent and her team created an itinerary that superbly met our objectives. For example, our youngest grandson now has a Māori pen pal who is his age and they have started exchanging emails.

Our accommodations were superb, particularly the house in Nelson over Christmas, where we BBQ’d steaks while the kids swam in the pool and hot tub.

The next time we plan to go to New Zealand, we will definitely contact this travel company.

New Zealand Trip Review: 9 Weeks

Our trip was incredible. Zicasso’s tour operator was fantastic in planning and executing this special trip. We were in New Zealand for almost nine weeks.

Twice during our travel, we were able to get instant help to adjust our travel schedule, once because we wanted more time in one place and later to accommodate for being sick for a week.

Our trip involved 20 different hotels, inns, and guest houses, while experiencing boats, trains, and car driving to navigate both islands. The tour operator helped to arrange about 50 different events for us and then we added in many more ourselves before we left.

It has been almost a year since we traveled (Feb-Apr 2025). We have praised the tour operator (and Zicasso) to all our friends for its incredible attention to details and help anticipating all contingencies. The app for the trip was incredible in supporting the travel and collecting all the details of the arrangements comfortably in one place on our cell phones. We drove more than 2,000 miles during our trip and used Google Maps continually to navigate everywhere.

All our accommodations were comfortable. We carefully planned our packing to match the temperatures predicted for each location. We each traveled with a carry-on suitcase and a small backpack, and had everything we needed.

What helped with our planning was that we actually rehearsed the trip for several nights two months before we left and pre-planned special dinner reservations.

Australia, New Zealand Vacation Review: Adelaide, Lizard Island, Kangaroo Island, Milford Sound, 1 Month

This was our second trip organized through Zicasso and both trips were great. In retrospect, we might have changed a few things, but by an overwhelming margin, the trip was great. Interesting tours, knowledgeable guides, nice hotels.

New Zealand Mother-Son Trip Review: South Island, Fiordland, Doubtful Sound, Westland, Banks Peninsula, Kayaking, 4WD Safari, Routeburn Track, Cruise, 2-Week Trip

Our trip was spectacular and magical! My adult son (who was comfortable driving there) and I traveled to New Zealand from November 8 through November 23, 2025. When planning, I purchased the Lonely Planet book to help me decide locations. Since we were mainly interested in nature, we focused on the bountiful nature of South New Zealand. I then looked for a local company that could work with me and sent them the many places mentioned as the most beautiful places inaccessible on large tours. They worked with us every step of the way to find out-of-the-way, beautiful places and learning experiences.

Their itinerary even gave a lot of information about favorite things to do on our own in each area, in between our excursions. Each excursion was extraordinary—beautiful, fun, informative, and very well managed by the local guides. Since we went in their late spring, the flowers everywhere were in full bloom and most spectacular. We would rate the tour operator with a 10 out of 5!
