Barcelona – Tapas and Taverns History Tour Through the El Born Neighborhood

Aromas will guide you through El Born. The narrow, neighborhood streets are a warren of floating smells and sounds. Every so often you will get a whiff of something exquisite that jumps out from the general indulgence. You can follow the thread, unravel the scents, and discover tapas at a bodega. People will gather on the tavern’s small tables with wine glasses in hand and small dishes on the table. Chitchat will provide an orchestral backdrop to clinking plates and jubilant chefs. Here, you will eat tapas like a local in true Barcelona style before moving on to the next authentic tavern.

Along the way, you will learn about history as well. From the footsteps of Columbus and Roman soldiers, this neighborhood has seen its fair share of stories. Churches from competing periods will also dot the warren as their bells will cling with the passing the time. Over the evening, you will visit four different bodegas on a private tour that provides a complete array of flavors. All of them will be family-run establishments, and the guide will know exactly what to order and where to order it. Between the bars, you will walk off a little of the food in the oldest part of the city, and at each stop there will be a chance to sample different Catalan wine as well. It will be an indulgent evening that immediately evokes Barcelona’s food-loving atmosphere.

Detailed Description

The people of Barcelona like to showcase their culture through their food with tapas being a primary example. Chefs took this Andalusian style of cooking and made it entirely their own. So, in Barcelona, you find Gothic-style bodegas and taverns that are hidden in many neighborhoods. Here, they love to do things differently. Gaudi and company did the same thing but with art nouveau as they began an architectural movement and made it distinct to the region. Much like the cuisine, they enhanced a style and created something that is much more revered than the original. Another example comes from Poble-Sec where the Basque style of pintxos has been given a Catalan twist.

Here, the culinary and cultural realms are inseparable. You can listen to historical tales in a tiny Catalan village while gazing over seemingly endless vineyards. Fine dining restaurants present their creations in an artistic style that is influenced by old city residents: Miro and Picasso. Moreover, and perhaps most poignantly of all, eating and drinking are two essential components of day to day life. Food is never something to rush; it is something to savor and something to create a memory around every single day. The locals love the food, and you will love it too, whether a backstreet bodega or a Michelin-starred restaurant. More importantly, you will love the culinary side to the culture and how so much of the day is dedicated to eating.

Celebrating both the gastronomic and historical realms, this eight-day tour through Barcelona is a mix of private tours and off the beaten track neighborhoods. It is far more than a list of restaurant reservations. The idea is to feel the local culture through the food, whether that’s at 2,000-year-old streets, art nouveau marketplaces, or those restaurant terraces that make the city so inviting. Local chefs and food connoisseurs lead your tours as their specialisms help them showcase the distinctive pieces of culinary culture. Over the eight days, you will find the city’s patchwork history can be stitched together by all the flavors that roll around your palate.

Start with the famous El Born neighborhood, dining on tapas as the streets whisper of Roman legend and Gothic ghouls. Then, travel off the beaten track on day two when you travel to Gracia a neighborhood for understanding a Catalan culinary tradition, particularly at the local food markets. Wine is integral to culture in Barcelona, and Spain’s best sparkling wine comes from Penedes, which is just an hour away from the city. Spend day three popping the Cava corks before the iconic art nouveau architecture is your focus on day four. A pintxo tasting in the evening in Poble-Sec follows Gaudi and company for the opportunity to taste how local produce of Catalan has restyled the Basque invention.

The second half of this vacation follows a similar style, marrying gastronomic experiences with cultural highlights. Wander the oldest parts of Barcelona on day five before incredibly modern Michelin dining. Explore Penedes on day six, which is a DOCa wine region of quaint villages and luscious reds. Journey through Catalan art on day seven, which will be followed by deconstructed tapas at one of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. By day eight, you will be in a very local frame of mind and will be determined to keep food part of your daily life back home. Looking for the best Spain travel experiences? Spain Tour Review: Scenery, Local Cuisine, 2 Weeks

The trip was great. Zicasso’s travel specialist and her crew put together a great itinerary and left us plenty of downtime, so we were not exhausted each evening. The drivers were good and, although not guides, offered plenty of history along the way. All the guides were exceptional.

We loved all the hotels, especially our hotel in the mountains. That was very special.

The travel specialist had obviously passed along the note that we did not want to go shopping, like sometimes happens with the guides.

The food and restaurant suggestions were all good.

Overall, it was a very well-planned and articulated agenda. The software that they use to keep in contact worked very well once I understood it! Lol.

My only comment was that on trips in the past, the beginning of the trip started with a personal stop at our hotel by a representative from the company. I understood later that their headquarters is in a more remote area. But if I was a new traveler, I would have enjoyed putting a face with the name. Fortunately, the package they left at the hotel did indeed have all our tickets and passes.

I would definitely recommend this travel company and would use them again.

Zicasso’s travel company took care of all our needs and if we needed to make changes or find reservations at great restaurants, they responded quickly and set us up in some fantastic restaurants.

The guides and drivers were all super-knowledgeable and nice. We would definitely use the travel company again for trips to Portugal and Spain, and also use Zicasso to help us find tour companies in other countries.

Spain, Morocco Trip Review: Barcelona, Andalucia, Chefchaouen, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Marrakech, Atlas Mountains, Architecture, Art, Riads, 2 Weeks

Flawless doesn't begin to describe how incredible and meticulous the planning and taste that went into designing our Spain and Morocco trip. I reached out to Zicasso’s travel specialist far in advance, describing a dream vacation for my husband and me that included a near-impossible amount of locations to cover through both countries in only two weeks. We had tried coming up with an itinerary with another planner prior to meeting the travel specialist, but it did not work out. When we shared our vision with the travel specialist, he materialized it on paper in a way that made sense and even made adjustments that fit within our budget. We got to see every location with enough time to savor each.

The order of travel from Barcelona to Andalucía to Morocco was an intricate weave that told a story of cross-cultural exchange. We started off with Gaudí architecture and the Sagrada Família, sunsets at the Puente Nuevo, Alhambra, and Córdoba, marveled at the grandeur of the mosque cathedral, savored seafood paella and Picasso art in Málaga. We finished off road-tripping in Morocco, starting from the blue city of Chefchaouhen, continuing our journey through Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Marrakech, and the Atlas Mountains. It was nothing short of magical.

We will never forget the beauty of the sun rising above the Atlas Mountains, private candlelit dinners on our private terrace in the riads, the colors of the souks, and the hospitality of our Moroccan hosts. Each riad was carefully selected and far exceeded our expectations. And of course, our driver in Morocco was an absolute delight and went above and beyond. Besides providing transportation, he acted as a friend who showed us the ins and outs, helping us see Morocco in a way that we would not have if we went in a large group or had chosen to come alone. Overall, my husband and I cannot recommend our travel specialist enough.

Spain, Portugal Travel Review: Douro Valley, Ronda, Sagrada Familia, Picasso Museum, Flamenco Show, Bullring, Bull Farm, Vineyard, River Cruise, 17-Night Trip

Zicasso’s travel company designed a fabulous 17-day Spain and Portugal tour for us. It was a pleasure to work with our travel specialist during the entire design process. First, the travel specialist spent time talking to us over the phone so she could get to know what each of us wanted to get out of the trip. Armed with that information, she was able to come up with a recommended agenda. We went back and forth a few times until she designed a trip that suited both of our interests. This trip turned out to be the perfect balance between learning about the history of the area, experiencing the culture, and enjoying our surroundings in rural and urban environments.

The week before we left on the tour, we reviewed our entire trip with the travel specialist over the phone. She wanted to answer any questions we may have had and to make sure we understood how to use our trip app. The trip app made it easy to see what we were doing each day. It contained descriptions of each tour and what was significant about the sites we were visiting. We had access to all our tickets through the app. There were Google Map links, so we could easily navigate to the location we needed to be. Recommendations for various restaurants and other things to do in the area were also included in the app.

The travel specialist provided her contact information and back-up contacts in case we needed anything during our trip. She made it clear to us that if our guide or driver was more than five minutes late to contact her. The travel company was there to support us 24/7.

The travel specialist pays attention to details. I highly recommend the travel company for designing a trip to Spain and Portugal.
