Queenstown – Rivers and Mountains
Flying in is part of the experience because fjords cut significant scars beneath the wingtips. Transferring from the airport to the town only takes 15 minutes, but it instantly showcases why this town is so revered. After a private airport transfer, you will have some time to relax before meeting a local guide over coffee. There are many ways to explore the landscapes around Queenstown, and you do not have time for them all, but even half a day can provide an inspiring journey into nature. One option will be to indulge in a boat ride on the Shotover River, which is a strip of cerulean water in a narrow ravine. You can also hike and mountain bike directly above Queenstown or tandem paraglide down to Earth.

Detailed Description
In some countries, you must search for places to go outdoors, but in New Zealand, there are very few indoors. This is a country where landscapes remain untamed and unchartered areas can still be found. Here, the wilderness dominates, and the trails are never crowded because there are so many. From golden beaches that are only accessible by kayak to fjords that can only be reached by helicopter, this will be the ultimate, 10-day exploration of New Zealand’s outdoors. You will explore Te Wahipounamu on the South Island, where the landscapes are as varied as they are dramatic. Over ten days, you will discover six different national parks and experience the country’s wonderful variety of activities.
Queenstown is an obvious place to begin your adventure because it is a town that is surrounded by lakes, mountains, rivers, and fjords. You can customize some introductory adventures with a local guide before indulging in an overnight cruise on Milford Sound. You will then fly in a helicopter above Fiordland on day three, which is when you will touch down in a wilderness that is dominated by ice sculptures and remarkable vistas. Wanaka will be your destination for day four, which is a handsome, lakeside town that acts as a base for exploring Mount Aspiring National Park. You can mountain bike single-track trails, horseback ride across woodland and meadows, or choose from one of many hiking trails.
Continuing by road, you will traverse the rest of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Te Wahipounamu. Your transfer will be private, and there are hundreds of places that you can stop along the way with options for canoeing or indulging in a picnic in a place of solace. Nights five and six will be spent beneath Franz Josef Glacier, allowing for a full day to go heli-hiking on the glacier and search for kiwis in the surrounding rainforest. Of all the South Island landscapes, this is probably the most dramatic because the juxtaposition of the habitats is so rare and congruent. Nowhere else in the world can you hike on a glacier that tumbles through a rainforest toward rolling surf.
You will complete your New Zealand excursion with three nights at Westhaven Inlet, which is a remote locale that is positioned between Abel Tasman and Kahurangi national parks. One full day will be dedicated to each of these parks, and you will kayak and hike to beaches that are otherwise inaccessible. Then, you will journey into a ragged mountain range of Kahurangi, which is a land of ravines, rivers, and iconic trails. Like with the rest of your journey, your days of adventure can be followed by laid-back evenings in luxurious locations. While New Zealand knows how to get your heart racing, it also knows how to bring you down to earth, so you can always feel connected with Mother Nature.

The organization was perfect! I especially liked all the excursions and the special chauffeurs who picked us up at the airports.

All four of us who traveled to Australia and New Zealand this fall agree that Zicasso’s travel specialist did a fantastic job assisting us with planning and the actual trip itself. She listened to our itinerary, wants and desires, as well as the time constraints and budget. And while we did spend quite a bit more than what we originally intended, we had the trip of a lifetime. We are all completely satisfied with our journey, as organized by the travel specialist.

From planning to execution, Zicasso’s travel specialist was fantastic. They were very responsive through the app while we were on the trip. They were extremely helpful in helping us recover our passports that we forgot in one of the hotel safes.

Our trip was incredible. Zicasso’s tour operator was fantastic in planning and executing this special trip. We were in New Zealand for almost nine weeks.
Twice during our travel, we were able to get instant help to adjust our travel schedule, once because we wanted more time in one place and later to accommodate for being sick for a week.
Our trip involved 20 different hotels, inns, and guest houses, while experiencing boats, trains, and car driving to navigate both islands. The tour operator helped to arrange about 50 different events for us and then we added in many more ourselves before we left.
It has been almost a year since we traveled (Feb-Apr 2025). We have praised the tour operator (and Zicasso) to all our friends for its incredible attention to details and help anticipating all contingencies. The app for the trip was incredible in supporting the travel and collecting all the details of the arrangements comfortably in one place on our cell phones. We drove more than 2,000 miles during our trip and used Google Maps continually to navigate everywhere.
All our accommodations were comfortable. We carefully planned our packing to match the temperatures predicted for each location. We each traveled with a carry-on suitcase and a small backpack, and had everything we needed.
What helped with our planning was that we actually rehearsed the trip for several nights two months before we left and pre-planned special dinner reservations.

This was our second trip organized through Zicasso and both trips were great. In retrospect, we might have changed a few things, but by an overwhelming margin, the trip was great. Interesting tours, knowledgeable guides, nice hotels.

It was so easy to work with Zicasso’s travel designer and the travel company. After her phone call, she worked up the trip of a lifetime. It was just perfect for us.
As we traveled, if there were any changes, we were alerted in a timely fashion. We were notified of delayed departures and possible cancellations. The only cancellation was quickly rescheduled as per our preferred time. No worries! We just have to check about two cancellations that were weather-related and how we get reimbursed for those expenses. Those cancellations were understandable and not the end of the world. We will be in contact with the travel designer to find out about those and know it will be an easy process, like everything else has been.
We will, and have, recommended this process to friends who want to visit New Zealand.
