"I was fascinated by the fjords, nature, and how advanced everything is"

Olena's love affair with Norway began years ago during brief cruise ship stops. "I really liked the beauty of nature," she recalled. "I was fascinated by the balance between everything in terms of functionality and beauty." Those fleeting visits sparked a desire to return and truly immerse herself in the Norwegian experience.

Planning a summer trip to Norway requires foresight, as Olena discovered. "To plan, especially for the busy season of June, July, and August, you need to start way in advance," she said. Her careful preparation paid off, resulting in an adventure that left her wanting more.

"Flåm had an incredible speedboat tour"

Olena's journey came alive in Flåm, a picturesque village nestled deep within the fjords. "We had a tour on a speedboat," she recalled. "We spent a couple of hours cruising the fjords, hearing stories about the really remote places." The experience went beyond mere sightseeing, offering insights into the lives of those who call these isolated regions home. “At one point, our guide showed us two isolated houses perched atop a distant cliff. They were actually part of a remote farm. It was so secluded that reaching it required a multi-day hike.”

A highlight of Flåm was a visit to a tiny village of just 60 people, famous for its brown cheese. "It's caramelized cheese that you can buy only in Norway," Olena said. A tasting session with the owner provided surprisingly salty and sweet flavors, but also stories connecting her to the heart of Norwegian culinary traditions.

"Forget about time because of the beauty of the scenery"

The journey between Oslo and Flåm on the iconic Flåm Railway was a feast for Olena’s senses. "The train had an old-fashioned style and was surrounded by gorgeous scenery," Olena recalled. The train ride showcased Norway's diverse landscapes, from frozen lakes to snow-dusted peaks, all while passengers relaxed in vintage comfort.

In Flåm, Olena embarked on a memorable hike to a stunning waterfall. "We climbed 500 steps or maybe more," she said. "That part wasn't my favorite, but you get to the top with a stunning panorama and the water – it's worth it!"

"A waterfall where you could walk behind the water"

Geiranger offered Olena one of her most unique experiences – walking behind a waterfall. "It's such a unique view and experience to get through this narrow passageway," she described. Olena's timing in Geiranger proved serendipitous. Arriving in the late afternoon, she took advantage of the midnight summer sun to embark on the waterfall hike around 6pm.

"We decided to do the waterfall hike that evening because it doesn't get dark until so late," she said. "It turned out to be the right choice." The following day brought challenging weather that made hiking impossible, but added its own unique charm to the experience. "It was a whole day of rain, with snow visible on top of the mountains," Olena shared. "But our accommodations had a hot tub, so we could sit outside with the snowcapped fjords behind us and enjoy that contrast." This unexpected turn of events allowed Olena to appreciate Geiranger's beauty from two starkly different perspectives – an active hike under the evening sun and a cozy retreat amidst the elements.

In the end, the experience epitomized Norway for Olena. "Flåm and Geiranger were small villages nestled inside the fjords. That is Norway for me!"

"A brewery looked like an old Viking house"

Norway's cultural experiences were just as memorable as its natural wonders. In Flåm, Olena visited a brewery that transported her back in time. "It looked like an old Viking house," she said. "The bottom floor looked like a bar, the second floor was a restaurant, but the whole thing looked like a museum, with a fireplace in the center of the bar and huge chairs surrounding the fire."

This blend of history and modernity extended to the local cuisine. Olena sampled everything from the local beer to reindeer and whale sausages, each dish telling a story of Norway's culinary heritage.

But a surprising aspect of summer in Norway was the weather. “In Norway in July, you still need winter clothes," Olena advised. "It's summer for them, but not for people who aren't from Scandinavia."

"We promised transport, we will give them transport"

One of Olena's most memorable experiences came unexpectedly, showcasing the efficiency and kindness of the Norwegian people. When a series of transportation delays threatened to derail their plans, local operators went above and beyond to ensure all travelers reached their destinations. The boat captain made multiple trips to a small village to ensure everyone's safe passage to a waiting bus.

The bus driver, realizing his passengers might miss their train, contacted the conductor who agreed to wait. The overall trip was delayed by 45 minutes, but the collaborative effort of boat captains, bus drivers, and train conductors ensured every traveler, including Olena, reached their destinations.

This experience highlighted the importance of staying connected while traveling, especially in remote areas. Olena's travel specialist proved invaluable in navigating these unexpected challenges.
