From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay, Vietnam captivates travelers with its contrasts. Ancient traditions meet modern energy, tranquil countryside gives way to vibrant cities, and culinary traditions tell stories spanning generations.

Suzannah and Lance are seasoned travelers who have lived and explored all over the world, but recently embarked on their first Zicasso journey through Vietnam. As a couple with different travel styles, they worried a structured itinerary might feel restrictive, as Suzannah prefers careful planning and Lance favors spontaneous exploration. Instead, they discovered a thoughtfully designed framework that provided direction and freedom, allowing them to experience Vietnam authentically, while maintaining the flexibility to follow their curiosity wherever it led.

'I was worried Lance would hate it because it was too structured'

Suzannah and Lance came to Zicasso through a glowing recommendation. Having traveled extensively together, but never together in Asia, they wanted expert guidance without sacrificing the spontaneity that makes their travel exciting. Suzannah was reluctant to plan the trip herself. They had a fair amount of time, but didn't want to waste it navigating logistics in unfamiliar territory.

When their first itinerary arrived, Suzannah's concerns surfaced. "There were all these specific times. Cooking class at 3:30, meet up at 2:30 for coffee," she said. "I worried Lance would hate it because it felt too structured."

She also worried about the type of experiences they'd have. "I was concerned we'd end up with Canadian tourists rather than being alone and enjoying the local culture," Suzannah shared. The detailed schedule seemed to promise efficiency, but potentially at the cost of authentic, intimate experiences.

'We went to get in line, but the guide took us to our own boat'

Their worries dissolved almost immediately upon arrival in Vietnam.

"We actually got [to the pier] and went to go on the tour," Suzannah recalled. "We started to get in line with everyone else, but the guide took us to our own boat and out of the line, into our own thing entirely."

That moment redefined their understanding of what a Zicasso trip meant. The detailed itinerary wasn't about herding them through predetermined stops. It created a private framework where every experience belonged to them alone. No crowds to navigate. No waiting for group consensus. Just Suzannah, Lance, their guide, and Vietnam unfolding at their pace.

'If we were really enjoying the bike ride, we didn't have to go to the cooking class'

The structure revealed itself to be something more nuanced than Suzannah’s initial concerns. Their travel specialist had designed an itinerary with intention, but with built-in flexibility that allowed them to follow their interests at any given moment.

"Our specialist explained that if we were really enjoying one activity or one place, we could stay," Suzannah said. "If we were having a really good time with the bike ride, we didn't have to go to the cooking class. We could adjust as we went."

This approach transformed the itinerary from a rigid schedule into a living document. It became a thoughtful suggestion rather than a mandate. They had the security of knowing what came next, while maintaining the freedom to linger when something captured their attention. For Lance’s affinity for spontaneity, this balance felt natural. For Suzannah, it provided the structure she appreciated, without the confinement she feared.

'What sounded lame or touristy was actually really nice'

One full day involved motorbikes outside Hanoi. Lance, confident in his abilities, wanted to ride his own. Their Vietnam expert had other ideas.

"Lance was sure he'd be fine riding his own motorbike," Suzannah said with a laugh. "But our specialist basically said, 'No way you're going to ride a motorbike in Hanoi on your own.'" The specialist's local knowledge overruled Lance's enthusiasm. The decision proved wise and kept them safe.

The trip itself initially sounded generic. "It sounded super-touristy," Suzannah admitted. But once outside Hanoi, they discovered the small towns where the government had given communities resources to recreate and preserve traditional artisan crafts.

"We visited pottery villages, glass-making workshops, weaving communities. There were five or six of them," Suzannah said. "What sounded lame or touristy was actually really nice. None of them were crowded and people were actually getting paid money rather than just working for a museum."

They witnessed authentic craftsmanship, not manufactured tourist attractions. The experience revealed their specialist's understanding of what they sought: cultural engagement that felt genuine rather than performative.

'The accommodations could easily have been just another Bonvoy, but they weren't'

The quality and variety of their accommodations surprised Suzannah and Lance throughout the journey. "We were super-surprised about the high quality of the accommodations, whether in the cities or in the countryside," Suzannah said.

Their travel specialist designed the route strategically, starting in the north, moving through the middle, then finishing in the south. Each property offered a different style and atmosphere. "We never got bored with the feeling of where we were staying," Suzannah explained.

In Hanoi, they enjoyed a five-star urban retreat that offered respite from the city's energy. In central Vietnam, they stayed in a jungle retreat with accommodations nestled in the treetops. "These were interesting, out-of-the-way, boutique places that helped us understand local beauty and hospitality," Suzannah said. "You would have to know Vietnam from your fifth or sixth visit to find these places on your own."

The accommodations weren't simply comfortable. They were carefully curated to enhance their understanding of each region. "They could easily have been just another Bonvoy property, but instead, they were distinctive," Suzannah reflected. The value extended beyond the physical comfort to the cultural insight each property provided.

'Our specialist was right; we didn't need two nights in Ha Long Bay'

One exchange during planning revealed the importance of trusting local expertise. Suzannah requested two nights in Ha Long Bay. Their specialist gently pushed back.

"Our specialist said, 'I don't think you'll want to be there for two days. One night should be enough,'" Suzannah recalled. She insisted on two nights initially, but their specialist was right.

"It was a zoo, mostly," Suzannah said. "Our accommodations were amazing. A small, gorgeous boat with maybe 12 people, but the bay itself was packed."

The experience taught them to trust their specialist's recommendations, even when they contradicted their own assumptions. The expert understood not just what Ha Long Bay offered, but what it didn't. They knew exactly how much time the destination warranted for the most meaningful experience.

'Our specialist was in touch with us every single day, for 21 days'

The relationship with their travel specialist defined the journey as much as the destinations. "We worked together for months before we went," Suzannah said. "Back and forth, tons of questions on both sides, suggestions from everyone."

The support didn't end when they departed. "Our specialist was in touch with us every day we were there, for 21 days," Suzannah shared. "At the other end of a text message for any hiccups at all."

One situation tested this attentiveness. "We arrived at one airport and no one was there to meet us," Suzannah recalled. "But our specialist was super-responsive. We had the personal WhatsApp and everything was sorted out within minutes."

That level of attention, before, during, and, implicitly, after the trip, distinguished the experience from any package tour or independent travel arrangement. "We would even love to go back with our specialist to explore Laos," Suzannah said, already thinking about their next adventure.

When Structure and Freedom Find Balance

Suzannah and Lance discovered that truly personalized travel isn't about choosing between careful planning and spontaneous exploration. It's about having both.

"This is not a package deal," Suzannah emphasized. "It's tailored to what you want to see in the time you have available. We stressed to people concerned that this might be like a cruise. It's way, way not that."

The value extended beyond the financial investment. "It seems like it should be enormously expensive, and it wasn't," Suzannah said. "The overall value for what we got was impressive."

More importantly, they experienced Vietnam with the confidence that comes from expert guidance and the freedom that comes from flexible execution. For destinations with less-developed infrastructure, places where navigation requires local knowledge and cultural sensitivity, this approach transforms potential challenges into seamless experiences.

Suzannah and Lance found their perfect travel balance with a specialist who understood not just Vietnam, but how to honor their different approaches to a trip. You can create your ideal journey with a local travel expert who will design meaningful experiences, while building in the flexibility to follow your curiosity.
