Detailed Description
Costa Rica is one of the world’s major adventure tourism destinations. It is famous for surfing, ziplining, volcano hikes, and getting muddy in the rainforest. This adventurous reputation follows the country around, but you do not need overly ambitious hikes in order to experience Costa Rica. This handcrafted tour will adopt a slow pace, and it is handcrafted with the best activities and destinations for senior travelers. Private guides will reveal how you can experience the country’s highlights without jumping beyond your comfort zone or workings yourself too out of breath.
You will begin your adventure in San Jose, where a traditional dinner with entertainment will provide a relaxed first evening in Costa Rica. On day two, you can explore a little more of the capital city, including two excellent museums and a decorous theater. After lunch, you will travel to La Fortuna, which is an iconic town that is nestled beneath Arenal Volcano. Everybody knows the volcano for its shape and hiking trails, but there is another side to the geothermal activity. You will spend three nights at an upmarket lodge that features private hot springs, and each evening you can rest your legs in the therapeutic waters while gazing at silhouetted volcanos.
Your two full days in La Fortuna area will provide contrasting experiences. You will spend one day in and around Arenal Volcano, and a local guide will explain different activity options and help you to explore at a pace that suits you. Then, on day four, you will travel to a small, indigenous Indian community, where you will be immersed in their culture, customs, craftsmanship, and Maleku language. Older people are revered in this culture, so you should receive a very warm welcome. Being older also allows you to converse with the community’s elders, so you can ask questions and learn more about changing lifestyles in this remote part of Costa Rica.
Nights five and six will be spent in Monteverde, and you can opt for a treetop walk en route to the cloud forest, where the guide will customize two days of activities to the wildlife that you want to see. Capuchin monkeys will be one highlight, and you can spot three-toed sloths as well. The birdlife here is remarkable with over 200 species that flutter around the mysterious cloud forest. Like in La Fortuna, the hotel is charming and boutique with sprawling gardens that are occasionally visited by the local wildlife. It is an excellent place to relax and have an early night, so you can wake up early and maximize the cooler, morning hours.
From Monteverde, it will be a breathtaking drive along the coast to Manuel Antonio National Park, which is another Costa Rican destination that is packed with rare flora and fauna. Here, you can spend the afternoon on the beach, where the sand is backdropped by indigenous forest, and dolphins often breach the Pacific waters. You can also choose to participate in a short hike through the rainforest or a sunset sailing trip along the coast. You will be on the water on day eight, enjoying a private boat tour through thick mangrove forests before a short transfer returns you to San Jose for your outbound flight.
