Detailed Description

Australia and New Zealand grab you by the hand, magnetically pulling you into a spell of adventure and excitement. Lace up the boots and climb aboard, allowing the countries' visual euphoria to greet every mountain bike turn, kayak paddle, or intrepid snorkel. These are countries that compel you to be outdoors, dozens of pristine national parks offering escapades suitable for everyone. Simultaneously, there's a wonderful tranquility and calmness to this lost continent. Each new adventure is easily accessible, every surge of adrenalin is matched by a soothing vista, and footprints provide the only impact on prehistoric landscapes. Australia and New Zealand outdoors is Australia and New Zealand at its best; intimate, achingly authentic, and glowing with surreal wonders.

It all starts in Sydney, unique adventures showcasing the diverse sides to this world famous city. Walk up the city's spine, climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge for stupendous views of a cityscape merging with nature. Then get lost in the old streets with a city bicycle tour. Behind Sydney is a shimmering expanse of vibrant mountains and eucalyptus engulfed valleys, the Blue Mountains offering a day of panoramas and walking trails. Undertake tropical Cairns for the next three days, the experience centered around deserted beaches and the astonishing beauty of the Great Barrier Reef. Aboriginal locals help to show you around, and marine biologists provide a narrative to accompany underwater exploration.

Fly across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand's South Island, the self-proclaimed “adrenaline capital of the world” welcoming every outdoor enthusiast with a mischievous grin. Ride a jet boat into narrow icy canyons, take your pick from five bungee jumps and swings, and indulge in the natural drama that overlooks Queenstown. Lake and dazzling mountains combine to provide an oil painting of reflections and serenity, and dozens of hiking trails start within meters of your hotel. It's a landscape that's inspired millions, including Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson. Tour the famous shooting locations, from hobbit-crossed swamps to Gandalf-inhabited pastures. Like every destination during this itinerary, a perfectly appointed boutique style hotel offers a relaxed evening and a chance to rest the legs in indulgent luxury.

Fly to the country's volcanic North Island and immerse yourself in your final base, the geyser-strewn town of Rotorua. Geothermal activity bubbles below your feet and a Maori tribe greet you, their indigenous war dance reminding you of who protects this untamed environment. The North Island is an outdoor paradise, and it's enjoyed from a multitude of angles; hike to hidden waterfalls, kayak across lakes to island hot springs, white water raft through the forest, and mountain bike on stunning trails lost in the trees. Aching muscles are then enchantingly rested with a winding journey to the Hobbiton movie set and Auckland. So pack the outdoor spirit and get ready to explore, for Australia and New Zealand are waiting to be discovered.

Australia Tour Review: Melbourne, Phillip Island, Tasmania, Hobart, Freycinet, Maria Island, Great Barrier Reef, Sydney, Bridge Climb, Opera Tour, 13 Days

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Australia and, with the help of Zicasso’s travel specialists and the team, we were taken care of in every way possible. Working with the travel specialist was a breeze; she helped bring our trip ideas to life while also offering some great suggestions of her own. During the trip, we were also supported by the team when we needed to reconfirm details or track down missing documents (like our park pass, which we had forgotten to bring) and finalize all of the trip details.

The hotels were stunning and each excursion was more incredible than the last. Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and professional, which made each experience even more enjoyable.

We highly recommend using this travel agency and Zicasso for an unforgettable trip!

New Zealand Vacation Review: Christchurch, Queenstown, Doubtful Sound, Te Anau, Lake Tekapo, Kaikoura, Cruise, Bike Tour, Glowworm Caves, 3-Week Trip

We had a great trip! All the logistics and connections were spot-on. If I had it to plan again, I would incorporate fewer long drives and possibly take one or two short flights. We had three days of actual driving five-plus hours, which turned into six to seven hours with stops.

Highlights included the Christchurch tour, the Around the Basin bike tour in Queenstown, the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, biking around Lake Tekapō, as well as Kaikōura, and the glowworm caves in Te Anau. The TranzAlpine train was enjoyable. However, the mountain scenery encountered was not as dramatic as that seen in the more southern areas.

Unfortunately, our helicopter ride to the glaciers in Franz Josef was rained out. Our days in Queenstown were muted with fog, so both the gondola dinner experience, as well as the dinner cruise on Lake Wakatipu, were somewhat compromised. Both activities involved large buffets, with mediocre food and lots of tourists.

We enjoyed the Fiordland jet-boat ride and the biking back option. I felt the portion on the water was a bit light on the 360 turns and heavy on the nature focus. The Dark Sky experience was a disappointment, as wind conditions only allowed our group to go to the crater, not the observatory. Add to that a very bright, near-full moon and the conditions were not ideal for viewing.

After that late-night experience, the next day we drove to Lake Tekapō (with stops, six to seven hours). Between the time in the car and a developing hip issue that could compromise the required hiking, we decided not to drive one-and-a-half hours the next morning to Mount Cook for the Tasman Glacier tour.

Kaikōura is an attractive, quiet coastal town that was a nice final stop on our itinerary. We rented bikes and traversed the Peninsula Trail, including the seal colony.

All of our accommodations were in line with the parameters that we gave Zicasso’s travel specialist regarding location, ratings, and features. We especially enjoyed our hotel in Christchurch, our hotel in Te Anau, and our inn in Kaikōura. The motel in Lake Tekapō was the most dated property; however, the location was fabulous.

Again, we had a wonderful trip and I have already recommended this travel company to our friends, who are booked later this year.
