Mexico’s Maya Worlds: Highlands, Jungle, and Yucatán

Jaguar head and pyramid of Kukulkan - Chichen Itza, Mexico

What to expect on this itinerary

Explore Mexico’s Maya world on this nine-day journey through the highlands of Chiapas, the rainforest city of Palenque, and the limestone plains of the Yucatán Peninsula. These regions are connected by the enduring legacy of Maya civilizations, yet each has a distinct landscape, climate, cuisine, and cultural character. Begin in San Cristóbal de las Casas, where highland communities sustain remarkable textile traditions and religious practices shaped by Maya and Catholic belief. Continue through waterfalls and tropical forest to Palenque, then fly to Mérida for the great ceremonial cities of Uxmal and Chichén Itzá, the ochre streets of Izamal, and the cool waters of a cenote.

San Cristóbal de las Casas – Arrive in the Chiapas Highlands

On arrival at Tuxtla Gutiérrez International Airport, meet your private driver for the journey into the Chiapas highlands. The drive to San Cristóbal de las Casas generally takes around one hour and 15 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions. As the road climbs, the air grows cooler and pine forest closes in around the route. At an elevation of approximately 7,200 feet, San Cristóbal de las Casas unfolds in cobbled streets, terracotta rooftops, colonial façades, and woodsmoke drifting through the evening air. The city is named for Bartolomé de las Casas, the 16th-century Dominican friar who became bishop of Chiapas and was an influential early advocate for indigenous rights. After settling into your hotel, take an evening walk through the historic center, perhaps pausing at a market or café before the mountain air cools after sunset.

Mexico Trip Review: Mexico City, Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido, Cooking Class, 12 Nights

Our trip to Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Puerto Escondido was amazing! Zicasso’s travel agent planned an itinerary that met all of our wishes and they were very responsive and accommodating. We were happy with the hotels they chose and the excursions (especially in Oaxaca!) really made the trip special!

Mexico Travel Review: Mexico City, Teotihuacan, Cholula, Museums, Anthropology, 8-Night Trip

To a person the guides were really good, knowledgeable and engaging. I enjoyed being with them a lot and I learned a lot -- they were real experts and really made the trip come alive and worthwhile.

My stay at the hotel in Mexico City, by contrast, was a mixed bag -- my first 4 nights were in a lousy room; I was moved to a room of the sort I would expect for the last four nights.

I recognize that in planning the trip I started late, but even so, found the person I worked with in planning the trip unhelpful. My previous Zicasso trips, the agent that I ended up working with took the initiative to suggest lots of options to choose from. The travel agency suggested very few -- I finally took the initiative, googled UNESCO sites in or near Mexico City, picked ones that I thought were interesting and asked for those. So, in short, I more or less planned the trip without input from them. Next, while pick up times and connecting with drivers and guides were clear, many parts of the itinerary were fuzzy (eg I was dropped off near a restaurant in Coyocan (spelling?) at 3 pm, the restaurant couldn't find a reservation but graciously gave me a table, but later figured out that my reservation was at 7 -- this wasn't anywhere on the itinerary, the driver didn't know -- he expected to pick me up about an hour after he dropped me off -- and there was literally nothing outlined to do between when I was dropped off and 7 pm when the agency had booked a reservation -- no suggested things to do, places to visit, things to see in the area. To be clear I didn't know there was a 4 hour window to see and explore on my own neither did the driver, we both thought that dinner was at 3 pm with a return to the hotel to follow. I'm told its an interesting neighborhood -- home of Frida Kahlo -- but there was no guidance provided. This was true of all of my free time-- no suggested things to do, museums or sites to visit, possible self-guided walking tours, etc. In short, while pick up times and meeting guides, etc were handled well (and the person from the agency assigned to assist once I got to Mexico City, was very helpful), parts of the itinerary were poorly organized and there weren't the usual suggestions about places to eat, museums and other sites of interest to visit on my own that I've come to expect from Zicasso arranged travel suggested were not included. Usually there has been something about tipping, but the agency didn't provide anything helpful beyond a very limited, barebones itinerary. In this regard, it was clear on some of the guided parts that there wasn't a match between the agency's barebones itinerary and what the guides thought that they were supposed to do.

Mexico Vacation Review: Mexico City, Teotihuacan, Art, History, Culture, Guides, 1 Week

This is the second time we’ve used Zicasso. We used it for our honeymoon in Spain and for our next trip abroad in Mexico City. I won’t comment on the Spain trip here (which was amazing; look for my other review), but Zicasso and their travel partner in Mexico City were nothing short of incredible. They planned the most amazing itinerary, taking into account art, history, culture, and whatever else I’m missing. The travel specialists were incredible to work with and genuinely a pleasure to talk to. Every tour we did was fantastic and so was each guide. Our guides were incredible. I would recommend everyone every time.

Mexico Vacation Review: Mexico City, Pyramids, 7 Days

I can't begin to thank you enough for putting together my Mexico City journey. Zicasso's travel agent was fabulous to work with before and during my trip. He responded extremely promptly when there were even little glitches while I was in Mexico City.

The tours selected for me couldn't have been better and were exactly what I wanted. The guides were professorial and entertaining. I learned so much. I certainly would use this travel agency again.

Mexico Family Vacation Review: Merida, Mayan Culture, Cenotes, 5-Night Tour

We had a wonderful trip to Merida planned by Zicasso's travel agency. We were two older adults and a teenage nephew. We thought this might be difficult to plan for, but they really listened to what we wanted and planned activities that all three of us enjoyed.

The accommodations they suggested were terrific, in Merida itself and in a hacienda outside of the city. We give four stars instead of five because of two mix-ups with the driving arrangements. They were really not major and may well have been the fault of the transportation company, but we thought they should not have happened. Except for that, everything went exactly as planned and the agency kept in touch with us and was always available in case we needed anything.
