We chose to go with a travel agency because we were going to be in Germany over Christmas. Not knowing the language very well, I was concerned with being able to find places to eat and things to do on those few days around Christmas when everything typically closes. Our travel agency booked us into a hotel that covered dinner for those 3 nights at Christmas and they even sent us a Christmas gift!
We really enjoyed our trip and the service from this company was amazing. The work they put into planning our trip and giving us tons of options to choose from was quite impressive. I usually plan our trips on my own so I know how much work that is. We had 2 weeks without a care in a foreign country because our agency kept in touch on a daily basis, planned all of our travel in Germany (even arranged drivers to and from airports and train stations). They arranged the rental car and couldn't have made it easier to return it. We just left it at the hotel where it was picked up by someone else. They provided ample maps and brochures and knowledgeable, friendly tour guides that gave us great tours of the cities we stayed in.
I really can't say enough good things about this travel agency and I'm glad that Zicasso paired us up with them.
We each have our favorite parts of the trip, and it was all fantastic so it's hard to pick. I think my husband liked the beer (duh) and the WWII stuff the best. All of our guides knew so much about German history and it was neat to see in real life where scenes we've seen in books took place. Dachau was extremely vivid since we were there in the winter and it was so bleak and freezing.
My favorite parts were the Christmas Markets, the Glühwein, the scenery, and I especially liked chatting with the locals. My German isn't strong, but people were so friendly and patient that it was a lot of fun.
I think we would have done The Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden. We had planned on it, but somehow forgot while we hiked a bit at the Königssee. I wish we would have been able to do more of the Christmas Market in Nuremberg. I would have gone to St. Peter Stiftskeller in Salzburg instead of skipping it like we did. That was on us, we had reservations, but just didn't feel up to going that night. I almost wish I would have skipped having Nürnberger bratwurst, that stuff is addicting! I dream of it! I didn't try the McDonald's Nürnburger, but even it looked good on the ads.
