Overall we were pleased with the attention of our travel company. We were, however, very disappointed with the 3 night luxury accommodation we had requested in the Serengeti. It was far from luxury. In fact, we found with considerable searching that the camp has a two star rating. Let us be clear, for a mobile camp in the remote Serengeti we would have found the camp acceptable, but certainly not luxury! Meals were excellent and staff was attentive. Our issues, among other things were: a sagging mattress, Dollar Store white plastic curtains in the on-suite bathroom, and no pool for relaxing after a hot day on game drives. We're not sure how something went so wrong! We are especially disappointed that our travel company has made no effort to reach our to us to address this discrepancy!
Two other accommodations were beautiful, relaxed, and elegant. Meals were very well prepared and served. Staff and safari drivers were verY attentive. Wildlife did not disappoint. The freedom and focus of each species in the wild was captivating. We will never again visit a zoo.
We might choose to start our safari in the Serengeti which is vast and expansive, and end at the very beautiful Ngorongoro Crater which is more intimate, up close, and personal with incredible proximity to wildlife.
TRAVEL COMPANY COMMENTS:
We did get a chance to communicate with the clients and it seems it was a difference in understanding of an upgraded camp which caused them to give the lower rating.
They originally had a very simple mobile tented camp in the Serengeti in their itinerary and asked for an upgraded camp which we gave them, as they wanted to go up a notch in luxury.
In circling back now that they have returned, they said they wished for a pool and that some of the décor in the tents was very basic. It’s challenging as the décor at this lodge is a major upgrade from the camp we originally offered – which is lovely but very, very simple…and they never requested a pool, as none of the mobile camps have pools… as a mobile camp is just that – a moving camp with no permanent structures.
The tented camp we settled on is definitely several notches up in luxury and price – and is considered a solid 4-star camp in the Serengeti.
The feedback from clients just points out how we need to continue to get better and better at explaining and qualifying the differences between client’s understanding of terms like luxury. We appreciate their feedback and am nonetheless pleased that it was a wonderful trip.
