My husband and I have been on private tours before. Our Africa Safari travel agent was by far the best experience we have had. The hotels were as we liked them, small luxury boutique hotels with character. The hotels' staff were particularly responsive. The guides congenial and informative. In fact, knowing that we were foodies, the hotel in Cape Town made reservations for the finest restaurants in South Africa -- reservations that require months to secure. And the food, when included in the tour, was excellent.
Our agency arranged for us to visit two reserves. When I asked why two, they explained that we would see different wildlife at each. And indeed we did. And it was enjoyable to stay at two different safari hotels -- both small luxury accommodations that were quite different. The safari guides gave us all types of information while locating animals that we had hoped to see.
Unfortunately, I contracted pneumonia and could not have asked for more kind and useful assistance by the hotel staff in Cape Town and our local guide. In fact, our guide assisted us on his day off with several emergency tasks.
It depends on who you ask. For our grandson it was, surprisingly, the shantytowns -- he had never experienced poverty that was so apparent -- and the safari's. For me, it was the two cities and the museums of conscience we visited. I am on the board of a young such museum and I learned a great deal about how to present difficult material. And of course seeing animals in the wild satisfied my reasons for going on safari. My husband enjoyed everything.
I wouldn't get sick!
The trip was a bit too short for the distance we travelled. I would have liked a more in depth experience. I would spend more time in the cities we visited. I would have like to get to know them more in depth than we had time for. I would have liked to have visited the township(s) with a Black guide to gain their personal perspective on their country, especially today. Similarly, I would have preferred a black guide in Soweto. This is not a criticism of our guide, but obviously he could not provide us with the perspective of the Black inhabitants.
