Our travel agency provided great service during a complicated travel week. They were overall professional, friendly and helpful. We had one guide that seemed to be having a bad day and it was not enjoyable for us! They could have handled the Urubamba strike better. We were made to get up at 2 am to avoid the strikers. Instead, they should have changed our hotel and allowed us to get some sleep.
The personal tours to Machu Picchu. I really liked the second day at Machu Picchu where we hiked on our own to Sun gate. The market and restaurant tour in Lima was great. Pisac market and ruins were great. We learned about quality of alpaca, textiles, etc. The hotels were fantastic and the food was great.
Yes, absolutely. I would allow for shorter days. In general, we did not get to bed until after 11 pm and we were up and out by 7 am or even at 3 am one day. We were terribly sleep deprived. My son said it best..."this trip is really a series of naps followed by long hikes and tours".
TRAVEL COMPANY COMMENTS:
We know that changes on the itinerary due to external situations always have en effect on the trip experience even if we, as tour company, did the best we could to cut the impact on the travel experience.
In this case the best option for these clients was to stayed at their original hotel in the Sacred Valley and leave to Machu Picchu early the next morning to avoid the strikers. We believe it was the best option since the alternative was to move them to a village named Ollantaytambo where the only two hotels we work with were fully booked (July and August are the most crowded months in the area) and the rest of hotels there are small precarious hostels we don't even work with, and definitely would not use for our clients, even less for these clients whom were staying at the most luxurious hotel in the area. It would have been an immense drop on the quality of the accomodation and of course it is not what the clients paid for.
As for the comment on the tours, we would like to point out that besides the ealry pick up for the Machu Picchu tour (3 am) there was just one tour scheduled at 8 am, the other two tours were scheduled at 9 and 11 am respectively. Most of our full day tours last between 6 and 7 hours (except for the Machu Picchu tour, which due to the distances to cover could last 9 to 10 hours, or even more).
Finally, about the complain on the guide, we have to say that the guide assigned to make the Machu Picchu tour is one of our best and more knowledgeable guides in the area, so we are sorry to hear that on that day he was not up to the standard he usually provide to the clients. We apologized to the client about this and our customer satisfaction team and regional operations manager are already taking the proper measures to prevent this to happen with future clients.
