My husband and I are both avid travelers and generally prefer to book things on our own, without the help of a travel company. However, planning on our own 10 year anniversary celebration trip to Peru became too daunting and we realized we needed the help of a travel company. I got in touch with a United States based travel agency that specialized in South America and also was also put in touch with this travel agency through Zicasso (which I had never even heard of or used before!). We ended up using this company because I felt like they had a better idea of what we were looking for out of this trip- a private, high end/ luxury trip to Peru that still had an "authentic" feeling to it. Although we had some hesitations about using a travel agency we had never heard of and that wasn't even based in the United States, we are so thankful that we trusted our instincts and went with this company. They planned an incredible trip for my husband and I. Everything that our travel agency took care of went exactly as planned- from the airport greetings to the transfers, hotels, restaurant reservations, etc. We made a last minute decision to spend longer in Cusco and cut out the Lima portion of our trip and our travel agency worked with us to accommodate us even though it was a week before our trip. When our return flight home to the U.S. from Lima was unexpectedly canceled, we contacted the emergency number for our travel agency and even though it was late at night, we had someone from this company on the phone to assist us in getting transportation and a new hotel reservation.
We loved everything about our trip. We had the BEST guide who we would recommend to everyone! One of the many highlights of our trip was hiking the one day Inca trail with our guide to get to Machu Picchu. It was a challenging hike but an incredible way to arrive at Machu Picchu- truly a magical experience. We loved visiting Pisac market on a Sunday and touring the Sacred Valley with our guide and eating lunch in Huayoccari Restaurant. Moray, the Maras salt mines and Ollantaytambo were breathtaking. Cusco is a gem of a city and we loved having the opportunity to visit the market with a chef and then take a cooking class.
We have three young children at home so we would have liked more time, but that was not an option for us this time around. We arrived in Cusco from Aguas Calientes late at night and could only squeeze in two nights and one and a half days. We would recommend three nights and two full days in Cusco so you have one day to tour the city center and surrounding sites and one full day to relax and explore on your own. We also didn't have time to spend in the Amazon or Arequipes and the Colca Canyon to see the condors. We would love to take a trip back to Peru to visit those areas.
