This travel company booked a wonderful 19-day Rail, Cruise, and Coach Experience; two nights in Auckland before the tour began; and air transport from California that included stops in Hawaii in both directions. Our trip planner at this travel company was very responsive and helpful. However, because all the air transport was booked through Air New Zealand but included Hawaiian Air and United legs, the return trip was fraught because it didn't occur to me to check in with Air New Zealand when we left Maui. Seems to me this confusion should have been anticipated by the travel agency.
Because the time in New Zealand was nearly all spent with the local tour company, the best of the trip relates to excellent planning, choice of tour guides, good hotels, and comfort of the 40-passenger coach re-outfitted for 20 passengers. The trip was overall memorable. It began in Auckland, went north to Bay of Islands, then traveled south on the north island, crossed Cook Channel, and toured a good deal of the south island—the highlight was an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound, but we found each area of New Zealand was special.

I also appreciate your feedback about your experience with your return flights. Because your flight from Maui to Honolulu was on Hawaiian Airlines, per your airline e-ticket, this is who you would have checked in with. Hawaiian should have also seen the continuing flight on United (which was a code-share flight with Air New Zealand), since all of your flights were issued on the same ticket. You had communicated previously that you were trying to check-in remotely and this is when things became confusing. We continue to find it often depends on who one ends up with on the phone or at the counter as far as airlines are concerned. I am very sorry to hear this ended up being an inconvenience for you.
