I admit I had some trepidations about using a travel agency...I'm usually much for of a DIY traveler. But, the logistics involved in traveling within Peru to visit Machu Picchu seemed like a wise time to make the investment--and boy did it pay off. It took just a few emails and one phone call with the the travel agency's staff for them to get a sense of what we were looking for and to have them recommend and ultimately arrange an itinerary. We received all the documentation as promised, and there was never once on our trip that we weren't met exactly as was planned out in advance. The level of guided tour and unstructured time was also a good balance.
Machu Picchu was by far the highlight of the trip, although our little side trips to Pisac Market and the ruins around Cusco were worth the visit. Lima was less interesting to us, though definitely good to take a 1/2 day tour and understand the history. And a great city for food.
Since we had upgraded most of our itinerary to superior properties, I would have asked the travel agency team for a superior property recommendation for our last night in Lima as well. Instead, we stayed at a slightly lower tier spot. We were only there one night, and our hotel was 'fine'--but after 5-star lodging the prior several nights, it was definitely a step down.
