Having never been to Europe we were excited and apprehensive on what we would experience. Finding the right travel consultant was important to us. The people at our travel company who helped us set up our trip were phenomenal. In the beginning they started off with our wish list of sites. We worked with them and edited it down to a manageable trip, time wise. We were unsure if “private guides” was extravagant or necessary. In the end we had both private tours and group tours. The guided tours were not only very interesting but were very well versed on their country and city. We learned so much and it gave us a feeling of having a “friend” showing us their home. At the end of the day we would reflect on all that we learned from the guides that we would never have known to even look for, if we did not have that “friend” with us. Each guide was personable, engaging and spoke great English. Every day with the private guide we realized it was the best part of the trip, everything went so smoothly. We had drivers pick us up at the airports/take use to the airports/train stations to and from the hotels, totally a hassle free experience. The relationship that this agent has with the people in Italy, resulted in a high level experience for us. Being from Italy she knew all the guides, hotels and restaurants and based her recommendations on firsthand knowledge.
All 16 days were very memorable! Probably the one most enjoyable and memorable was when our agent set us up with an all-day driver that picked us up at our hotel in Florence and drove us to Pisa, Luca and Montecarlo. Because of his relationship with our travel agent, he went above and beyond for us by taking us to a winery in Montecarlo for lunch. We had such a delightful time enjoying their wine (which we had to have some shipped home) and delicious lunch.
The little town of Luca was someplace we will return to someday. Venice, what a quaint town, where you can get lost many times, and saw so many local sites. There is nothing better than seeing the lights of Paris at night from the dinner cruise on the Seine River, or explore the art of The Louvre (where our guide helped us take a 10 mile museum and hit the highlights in 4 hours). The ancient city of Rome was breath taking. Rome is so fast paced with history everywhere you look. The churches were majestic and awe inspiring. What can one say about a church after seeing the Sistine Chapel? It was a goose bump experience. We will be shorting through the almost 3,000 pictures we took, re-experiencing the wonders of this trip.
We wished we had taken more time in Paris to see Notre Dame and another full day at the Louvre. Falling in love with Luca, we wish we had spent a couple of days there. Next time, we will rely more on our GPS on our phones and throw the maps away. It was a trip to remember for a lifetime and we are so appreciative to our agent and her team at at the travel company for making it a perfect experience. Thanks.
