Our 14 day trip to Spain (Barcelona, Costa del Sol, Seville and Madrid) was excellent, probably the best trip we have ever taken! Our travel company worked diligently with us during the planning of the trip and created an itinerary that suited our specific goals. My husband and I have different interests when we travel. He loves anything dealing with history and wine, while I love museums, shopping and good food. It can be difficult for accommodate us both, so typically we just plan and book our trips ourselves. For this we decided to try something different. Our travel agent listened to our respective wish list and came up with something that pleased us both. All of the tour guides selected for our tours were knowledgeable and informative. It was great to be able to interact with our guides, ask questions, drill down on historical topics that my husband enjoys. With our guides being local to the areas we were visiting, I was able to get excellent recommendations for restaurants and things we could visit on our own. Our drivers were professional, courteous, and we enjoyed developing a rapport with them on some of the long drives.
We were so disappointed when our trip was over and we had to go back to the "real world".
The easy answer is, "All of it!". For both of us, Alhambra and Generalife in Granada was one of the most stunningly beautiful places we have ever visited. In addition, La Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona is one of our favorite tourist attractions. We first visited it 13 years ago, and loved going back and visiting it again. In both cases, our guides were invaluable in providing us information and insight.
But in general, Spain is place that just steals your heart. The people are friendly, the unique architecture, and the physical beauty of the country takes your breath away. When I close my eyes I see the bluffs in the town of Nerja in Costa del Sol, with the clear waters of the Mediterranean below me and the Sierra Nevada mountains behind me.
For my husband, history geek and introvert that he is, his favorite moment was a random one. While walking through the narrow streets in the city of Toledo, we happened upon a group of school children working speaking english on the steps of a church. We stopped and listened, and were invited to interact with the children by their teacher for a few minutes. My husband said later it was one of those pure moments you only see in the movies.
Even in hindsight, we would have changed for this trip. Even though we had visited Barcelona before, I think we might have preferred to have one more day there, even if we had to lose a day somewhere else (probably Madrid).
