Overall a great trip. It was paced just about right with time for planned guided tours and free time to explore on our own. With all the required touch points (drivers at airport and train stations, hotel arrangements, guides, activities, etc.) I was impressed that everything was like clockwork without one miss or surprise... right on schedule.
Italy is a fascinating destination and full of interesting things to see and do.
Our agent and her staff was great with suggestions for our planning and guiding us all along the process. I tend to be a little nervous traveling, especially when language and customs are foreign, but I did not need to be concerned as everything went really well.
Seeing some of the great historical, natural and artistic facets of Italy. The private tour guides were knowledgable and paced the excursions to be comfortable and well paced to our liking. The food was great and I was happy that my dietary needs were able to be accommodated easily. The variety of activities was very good.
Our driver in Florence was particularly nice and was very polite yet very friendly. We enjoyed him very much. Other drivers were professional but not quite as engaging.
Hotels in Europe are a bit different that the standards expected in the US. We stayed at some wonderful beautiful and historic hotels but in one case the room was really too small to be comfortable, especially the bathroom (in Rome), even though the room was very tastefully decorated and high quality. Also it was a surprise that in October heat was not possible in hotel rooms, only air cooling. We had some days that were quite cold and a bit of heat would have been nice. These are things that could not have been "done differently" as they are likely part of the European Green programs. It is worth mentioning that all of the hotels were very well located close to major attractions which was very much appreciated (but again in Rome being close to the Vatican was not our idea of ideal... being closer to other historic areas would have been preferred).
One "activity" suggested and provided by our agent involved a dinner that was "beef overload". This was not a highlight as we are do not eat much meat. We would have been happier with some other arrangement.
