My spouse and I traveled to Italy for 8 days in June to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We spent 4 days on the Amalfi Coast and 4 days in Rome.
Overall, our trip was great! The Amalfi coast was amazing! Rome was filled with so much history, culture, and activity.
I had been searching for a travel agency that specializes in custom travel itineraries. We did not want the typical travel tour company that would give you a set itinerary with their chosen locations and tours. We wanted more flexibility in that regard. We had a choice between two travel agencies who contacted me through Zicasso, and I ended up using this travel company as they were very responsive. I talked with our travel agent regarding what we wanted, some must see activities, and the amount of time we would have in Italy. Together, her and I planned what I considered a great itinerary.
The entire Amalfi coast was the most enjoyable and memorable. We spent a day touring the Amalfi coast by car (with a guide) who showed us so much. We decided we wanted more, and so the next day we rented a scooter and did some exploring along the coast on our own. It was delightful! We stopped at a wonderful little beach near Praiano and just relaxed on the beach for a couple hours.
In Rome, we most enjoyed the people watching, street performers, gelato, and coffee bars. I loved staying right by the Pantheon. We were right in the middle of everything. We walked everywhere which was great!
Our day trip to Capri was magical as well. This may be the most beautiful island I have ever seen. The colors of the water were just incredible-a deep turquoise blue color and so clear.
I would do more research on Italian phrases, especially in restaurants. Menus did not always have items printed in English and it led to some frustrating restaurant experiences.
We got ripped off once while taking a taxi and we used a white city taxi with the city logo. I would ask the taxi driver up front what the cost for the trip would be (they don't always use a meter) and demand that they give me a price before I ever agree to take the taxi. Our driver claimed he did not know where the hotel was (right next to the Pantheon!) and so wouldn't give us a price beforehand. We told the front desk concierge what we paid and he saidthat is nearly double what is normally charged.
Lastly, I would have spent an additional day on the Amalfi coast and shaved a day off of Rome. As much as I loved Rome, the crowds and heat started to get to us.
