This was the first trip we've ever used a travel agency for and despite my initial skepticism (I tend to be super cautious about these kinds of services) I must say it was a really great decision, and this travel agency was the best choice for us. Our travel planner was nothing but accommodating and the perfect model of premium customer service, both before the trip and throughout. She made herself available for the duration of the time we were there and even though I'm sure we weren't her only clients, she sure made us feel like we were.
The trip was a once in a lifetime for us (our honeymoon) and measured up to be everything we had hoped for and more. Plenty of options for the the itinerary were presented and with our travel planner's insight we came up with an amazing 10 day excursion that went very smoothly overall.
The seven course dinner overlooking the Acropolis was simply phenomenal and served as a fantastic opening act for the food and wine that was to come. Our personal guides were extremely knowledgeable and gave us a perspective that we simply would never have been able to get on our own.
Our time in Chania was truly enchanting since it embodies the quintessential Greek seaport village and we really wish we could have spent an extra day there. The trip into the mountains for an authentic cooking lesson from the owner of a local taverna has given us a new love for the true Greek salad as well has hope that we might be able to make the same on our own.
Of course all of that was second only to our time spent on Santorini. Here again, the food and our accommodations far outreached our expectations, and the level of service from our hosts was awe-inspiring. The view from our balcony was something that you see in postcards and magazines, but I couldn't even believe that it was really all there in front of me.
Knowing now what we didn't know when planning, we probably would have spent an extra day in Chania rather than burn a day driving along the north coast of Crete to Heraklion/Archanes to visit the Minoan Palace of Knossos.
The Palace has parts that are interesting but it didn't truly represent the ancient Minoans since it was largely reconstructed from the imagination and conjecture of the British archeologist who unearthed it. In that sense I got the feeling like we were on a Universal back-lot movie set. Also our guide didn't seem that into it since it wasn't as much a 'true dig' as it was a tourist attraction.
The only other thing we would have done differently is perhaps swap out the sunset catamaran tour for something else. We didn't hate the catamaran tour, but in fair disclosure it is less of a tour and more of a swimming/bbq trip. If you're mainly looking to swim and snorkel with lots of other catamarans and their passengers and finish up with a pretty sunset, then this tour is for you. If you want a well organized, semi-private informed tour of the Santorini Caldera with unique views and a romantic sunset then you'll probably be left longing for more.
