For the most part our trip to Italy and Greece went incredibly smooth with only a small bump or two. Our travel agency was wonderful to work with. They really wanted to help plan a trip that was unique to us with our special interests in mind. Over 16 days we traveled to five different cities taking multiple modes of transportation all pre-arranged by our travel company. They offered suggestions on how to get from one place to the other and all tickets were purchased ahead of time for easy transport. I called our agent a number of times and she always called back in a timely manner. She did a conference call with my husband and myself before the trip to make sure all was in order and to answer any questions we had. She gave us multiple phone numbers of people to contact if we did have a problem on the trip, which fortunately we did not need to use them. We were in small group tours throughout Italy which was nice. We could interact with the guides and actually hear them!
There were so many it is hard to list but I will go through each city and comment:
Venice: All the canals and bridges. Incredible.
Monterosso in the Cinque Terre: Hiking to the different villages was very cool although we were only able to hike between 3 of them as the trail was closed for the last two (we took a ferry to see those). Each village is very unique, quaint and lovely.
Rome: The Coliseum and the ancient ruins. Amazing! Also just walking around Rome and seeing less well known places was a treat.
Santorini, Greece: An incredibly beautiful island. Watching the sunset from Fira was very special. Swimming in the clear, beautiful water was a treat after being in Rome doing a lot of touristy stuff.
Athens: We had a room looking up to the Acropolis so we could look out at it any time.
All of the accommodations our travel agency arranged were top notch.
1. Take more cash. Italians don't like credit cards whereas there was no problem with them in Greece.
2. I wouldn't go in the summer, if you can avoid it. It was very hot and very crowded.
3. The number of people in the tour in Athens was way too many. We would have enjoyed something a bit smaller or on our own..
4. Have more room in my stomach to eat more. The food was awesome!
