One of the smartest things we did is have this travel agency plan our honeymoon in Greece. After all the planning and stress that went into the wedding, I couldn’t wrap my head around planning a big international trip for right after. Luckily, everything was taken care of by our travel company. From the locations and excursions to every little car we had to take to and from an airport. We worked with a travel planner who was wonderful. He was engaging and very quick to respond. He listened to our interests and put together an exciting package. Then he worked with us on any changes or switches we wanted to fit our vision and budget. He spends part of his time in Greece so I trusted his recommendations more and it was comforting to know he’d be in the country we were traveling in case any issues came up. I did reach out a couple of times, just to confirm some timings or excursions and like always he was quick to respond. We knew we wanted to do Athens and Santorini. Our travel planner suggested Crete which wasn’t on our radar at all and we ended up adoring it. The hotels were all beautiful and centrally located. The excursions were very special, I highly recommend the catamaran trip in Santorini. We really didn’t have to worry about anything and that was quite a gift. It’s certainly not cheap, but if you are looking for luxurious and easy travel then this is the way to do it!
Our hotel in Santorini was a dream out of a catalog. It was on a Cliffside and our balcony overlooked the caldera/ocean. The views were unbelievable. We loved waking up to it with breakfast on the balcony and then watching amazing sunsets. The balcony also had a private hot tub which was pure luxury. We also really liked the Semi-private catamaran tour in Santorini. It was about 6 guests and the crew and all had a blast with unlimited wine, sailing, swimming and then a surprisingly delicious feast made right on the boat! We also loved the old Venetian harbor of Chania in Crete. Strolling the cobblestone at the water’s edge or eating at one of the many fabulous restaurants was very romantic. One evening a wonderful musician set up just outside of our restaurant and played. There was a gentle breeze and it felt like a scene out of a movie.
Hmm, I'm not sure I'd change anything. Maybe I would have spent more time in Santorini. But a couple of things to consider:
- We went in mid October. I recommend going outside July/August which everyone said gets crazy busy. October was perfect sight seeing weather - sunny and high 70s. But it wasn't exactly beach weather that late, which I was hoping to spend more time on. As New Yorkers we are used to cold water so went swimming on the boat and then again at a beach anyway. And it was not bad at all, but it wasn't tropical by any means. I would still take that over sweating and throngs of people though. There were some spots, especially in Athens, that were a madhouse of people and everyone said that it was nothing compared to the summer.
- We did Athens first, which was wonderful but isn't the most relaxing spot and requires a ton of walking. We were so tired from the wedding that part of me wondered if we should have done an island first. But the islands are so magical that doing Athens last might have been a let down. In fact, we heard a couple say as much at one of our dinners. I still think its worth visiting though. the history is amazing.
