I know it has been over two years since this trip, but it was without a doubt the trip of a lifetime. It was my father, my boyfriend and I that spent 12 days in Italy, visiting four cities in total: Venice, Florence, Rome and Sorrento (on the Amalfi Coast). This trip was incredible, with the perfect itinerary. We got to see everything we wanted to see, in such an efficient way. Having everything planned and set in advance (including transport to and from the airports, hotels, tours with tour guides paid for, etc.), made the whole experience more enjoyable and stress free. We wanted a mix of busy times exploring, and lighter, more relaxing days as well. It’s exactly what we got, and the perfect travel pace!
The travel company was amazing, especially our contact. She was extremely helpful, responsive, positive, and accommodating throughout the entire process. I truly could not have asked for a better contact to work with and would love to work with her again! Right from the beginning, she wanted to understand our needs and preferences to create the best itinerary possible. She is clearly experienced with Italy, as she recommended everything we were hoping to see and do. She kept well within the budget too, which is important. We had a couple drafts of the itinerary, to ensure we were getting the most of our time in each city. The final draft included contacts for each hotel, tour, tour guide, transportation company, etc. as well as detailed time instructions. It was thorough, which is much appreciated when traveling to a brand-new place. Our contact even included notes on each day with what to bring, any safety concerns, and other relevant notes. This helped us be prepared each day and have a one-stop shop for our entire journey. This itinerary was invaluable for our trip, we took it everywhere, made notes, leveraged any contact info we needed, and referred to her notes. It was well appreciated the time and effort that went into the itinerary, as it made the trip seamless and stress free!
Not only did our contact provide the itinerary, she also included all sorts of helpful documentation, with recommendations on restaurants, shopping, great things to do in each city outside of the pre-planned tours, and so much more! She also included dress code information for churches, etiquette on tipping, and other great tourist information. I brought all of this with me on the trip, and we referred to the material every day! It was extremely helpful and added to the experience!
Our contact also kept in touch throughout the trip, to ensure everything was going smoothly, and see if we had any questions. She connected with me to ensure we arrived safely in Venice, and got settled in. Then she connected with me towards the middle of the trip to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and see if we had questions. Finally, she connected with me on our second last day to confirm our flight details, and transportation to the airport (and to say it was sad we were leaving Italy soon!). It made the experience more pleasant to have someone to ask questions to, and ensure we were enjoying all that Italy has to offer! Of course, our contact also connected with me a couple days after we were back, making sure we made it home safely, and that we enjoyed the whole trip. She was a wonderful contact, friendly, and helpful. If I ever go back to Italy, I will connect and work with her again!
Every day had a memorable moment! I would list them all, but I think this review will be long enough without that! Overall one of the most memorable pieces was the tour guides. Each tour guide we had was cheerful, punctual, knowledgeable, and patient! My Dad likes to ask a lot of questions, and they were all accommodating. We learned so much, and it really enhances the experience to have a great tour guide to teach you about what you’re seeing. A couple specific memorable tour guides were our tour guide from Florence, and our tour guide from Pompeii. Our tour guide in Florence took us on an incredible food tour, but the highlight was visiting the museum that houses the Statue of David. She was knowledgeable, and took us through the history, story and creation of David. Being such a popular spot, there were crowds, but she knew how to maneuver us around, and move to quiet places to discuss the history of the statue. I even remember walking all around the statue, as she shared the different viewpoints and uniqueness of David. She was so well organized, and this helped us get a wonderful appreciation for the statue, and all the history it holds.
Our tour guide in Pompeii was wonderful too, as she took us to Mount Vesuvius to hike the volcano, and then for a delicious lunch in one of the vineyards at the base of the volcano. Then we were escorted by her to the archeological site of Pompeii and toured all around the ruins. She was very knowledgeable as well, and made a great story for us to follow as we walked around. She was patient with questions, as we walked slowly to appreciate what a great city it once was.
A logistical highlight as well was at the Vatican in Rome. Having pre-booked our tour through our contact, we were able to skip the huge line of tourists waiting to get in, and we had the priority group line! It made the time at the Vatican much nicer, since it was hot outside and we didn’t have to wait hours to enter!
Of course, one would be amiss to not mention the Coliseum. The history and grandeur of the Coliseum is breathtaking, and again getting to enter efficiently, and have a private tour guide added to the experience. We got to avoid the crowds, take lots of photos and learn everything about the Coliseum’s history.
My boyfriend’s favourite part was the day-trip we did to Pisa! He enjoys traveling to see places he has seen in movies, so the leaning tower of Pisa was a highlight for him. It’s a lot of fun to take photos where it looks like you’re holding up the tower! Plus we got to climb up the stairs to the top of the tower, which is more disorienting than you may think! It was great to have a day trip to see an incredible monument, and great that it was a more leisurely day since there was no tour, we got to explore on our own. We enjoyed being able to take out time, and really enjoy all that the town of Pisa had to offer too!
Once we moved to Amalfi Coast, we were blown away by our accommodation in Sorrento. The hotel was beautiful inside and out, with helpful staff, and a gorgeous view of the coast! We had a villa to ourselves, which was perfect for the end of the trip to have more space, and embrace the relaxed, coastal lifestyle! It was a highlight to walk into the beautiful villa with the view when we arrived! We knew we going to have a great stay, and a great time, on the Amalfi coast.
A memorable moment was also touring the gorgeous island of Capri. It felt like you were in a painting! We had a phenomenal private gozzo tour around the island, and again a wonderful tour guide/captain! He let us enjoy peaceful moments sitting in the sun taking in the scenery, while also giving us information about the island and the areas surrounding it. We also got to go inside the blue grotto, which is incredible! We would recommend the private gozzo ride, and our wonderful tour guide, it is a once in a lifetime experience!
The final highlight was, of course, the food, wine and gelato!!
I would recommend this trip, company and our contact to anyone. Like I mentioned at first, it really was the trip of a lifetime. I can’t thank our contact and the company enough for putting it together for us and making sure we had a wonderful time every step of the way!!
I don’t think we would do anything differently. We had the right mix of walking around while exploring, and relaxing as well which was perfect for my father. We had the 12 days split evenly between the four cities we visited, which was also the perfect time in each city. We enjoyed this trip so much, and it was so well planned! I already can’t wait to go back to Italy!
