Our trip to Costa Rica was filled with unforgettable memories and experiences due to the excellent advice and attention of our travel agent. What we especially liked about her was that she customized the trip to our individual needs. We told her what we like to do and what we didn't like to do, and she created a fabulous itinerary for us based on our preferences. She is very conscientious and spent a lot of time planning an individualized trip for us. She arranged all the details, including transportation at all locations. One day, on short notice, they had closed the airport that we were supposed to fly into and our agent was right on top of it. When we got to the airport, a driver was waiting for us to drive us to our location.
I should add that this was a difficult trip for her to plan because I have some disabilities due to a back injury and problems with my knees. I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to enjoy Costa Rica because it is a mountainous country. But our agent arranged a beautiful itinerary for us where my husband and I were able to enjoy the jungle and the wildlife in many different parts of Costa Rica. I had to walk slowly and use a walking stick, but that only allowed me to look around and enjoy the jungle and the animals even more. Why rush this once-in-a-lifetime experience?
The most enjoyable and memorable part of our trip is hard to choose because each location was different and magnificent in its own way. We did especially like lodge in Tortuguero. The staff was professional and very friendly and made you feel like a part of the family. The grounds were beautiful and had monkeys, sloths, iguanas and other animals right there. They are located on a canal and offered wonderful boat trips down the canal into the national park. It was very relaxing, and you learned about the history of the area and saw many animals and birds. We went in July and it was turtle nesting season. The most truly unforgettable and moving experience was being able to see a sea turtle lay her eggs on the beach. Access is controlled very carefully by guides and park personnel so that the turtles are not frightened. It's a beautiful balance between protecting nature and supporting tourism.
We also enjoyed Arenal. The Hanging Bridges tour takes you through the rain forest and the jungle, starting at the bottom and ending up at the top of the rain forest. It's an experience we will never forget. There are also many other wonderful tours to choose from there.
If we could take our trip again, perhaps we would go during the dry season rather than the rainy season. However, going during the rainy season had advantages. Because it was a little slower and there weren't as many tourists, the guides were more available to be flexible to tour with us depending upon the weather. If it was raining in the morning when we had a scheduled tour, we could just wait until the rain stopped and then go out on our tour. It was also a very good time to go out because once it stopped raining, the animals and the birds emerged. If we had had to cancel our tour for any reason during the dry season, the guides probably would have been booked up and unable to take us out at a different time.
Additionally, we would probably skip Corcovado and add an extra day at each location we visited. There's so much to see and do that it's hard to choose when you have just a few days. We want to clarify that the amount of time we spent at each location was our decision, not our agent's. Corcovado is beautiful and worth seeing but we would recommend going during the dry season. In the rainy season it's very muddy and we wet.
