We were extremely impressed with the itinerary that the travel company put together for us. The coordination of activities and transportation transfers was seamless and efficient. The guides assigned to our tours and activities were extremely informative and helpful, making every experience fun, easy, and informative. When traveling in the past we typically made all of our own arrangements and plans and shied away from formal planning by travel agencies, preferring to do our own thing. But this experience will have an influence on future travel planning, especially when traveling to a new destination, as the schedule put together by the travel company made everything so much easier and relaxing. The tour guides assigned to us in Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, and Iguazu were wonderful and made these amazingly beautiful destinations even more fantastic.
Where to begin!! We loved our 4 days in Buenos Aires and really developed a bond with our tour guide there, even asking her to join us for cocktails on our last night in the city. Our stay in Ushuaia was highlighted by the experience of visiting the island where Magellan and Gentoo penguins nest every winter. It was an awesome and awe inspiring day, one we will never forget the rest of our lives. Hiking on the Perito Moreno glacier was spectacularly beautiful and a once in a lifetime experience. We loved the charm and quirkiness of El Chalten and the beauty of the surrounding area. Finally, the trip to Iguazu Falls was a great way to end our trip as the beauty, scale, and excitement of the falls is otherworldly. All of these experiences really heightened our feelings of our own responsibility for doing what we can to make sure future generations of people have access to these natural wonders.
Unfortunately I fell while hiking the glacier and broke my finger but I would still do the hike again in a second, just try my hardest to make sure that a similar accident wouldn't happen again. As a positive, I will say the care I received at the hospital in Calafate was very good and remarkably inexpensive. The only activity that I would probably not do again or would not recommend to others would be the day trip to Torres del Paine. The mountains are beautiful but the day was almost entirely spent in the bus getting to and from Torres and Calafate and passing back and forth from Argentina to Chile. If we had known the day would be that long with minimal hiking, we would have probably chosen another activity for the day.
The only other thing that I might have done differently would have been getting back to Buenos Aires from Iguazu one day before flying out of Buenos Aires. The rush to get from one airport to the other in Buenos Aires and the amount of traveling to get home on that final day was sort of exhausting. But overall it truly was, even with my broken finger, a trip if a lifetime.
