Our travel representative was great. Weprocrastinated in planning our trip, which put our representative in a time crunch, but heput together an amazing vacation in northern Spain. The hotels he selected wereall great, located in the most convenient places. The view from our room inLeon was of the cathedral and an ancient Roman wall. The suite in Getariawas right on the water. Our hotel in Haro was built as a convent in 1373. Ourhotel in Madrid was right in the heart of the city, just a few blocks from thePlaza Mayor. And in San Sebastian we could, and did, walk to the beach.
Our representative met us in Leon and droveus to the car rental agency, saving us taxi fare. He led us back to the hoteland ensured we were safely parked for the night. Then he walked through townwith us and pointed out some of the highlights. We had encountered sometechnical difficulties getting Euros, but he escorted us to his bank whereour debit card finally worked. We had not expected such a personal touch.
Our representative made sure we had his cellphone number and encouraged us to call if there were any problems. There wereno problems. Every part of the trip went according to his plan. All of hisarrangements were carried out flawlessly. There was even a small gift waitingfor us at our final stop. I'm not bashful about posting negative comments online, but there was absolutely nothing negative to report. If I could givethis company more than five stars, I would.
In no particular order:
The pintxos tour in SanSebastian. We had expected to be part of a group, but it was just us two andour young and affable guide. We learned how to eat pintxos like locals and howto identify the best bars.
The winery tour in Haro. Welearned how Spain saved the French wine industry when it was reeling from thephylloxera infestation. Spanish wines were the reason we chose northern Spain, and we were not disappointed. The txokoli in Getaria was especially wonderful.
Climbing to the monastery atSan Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Can't imagine a more beautiful place to view thenorthern coast. Bring your walking shoes, and prepare for a workout.
Tapas. Delicious food thatcomes free with your drink. What a concept!
The history. Anything 200 yearsold in this country is ancient. In Leon there is a 12th century cathedral builton the ruins of a Roman fort that was already almost a thousand years old.
The trains. They run onschedule at travel at 180 mph. And the highways were wide, smooth, and wellmarked. Getting around Spain is a breeze.
I might try to get a reservation at one of the Michelin star restaurants in San Sebastian. Our representative had offered this and we declined, but maybe next time...
