Our chosen travel company, based in Spain, planned a very special, three-week, individually tailored trip for us throughout Spain (Basque Country, Barcelona, Madrid and 5 stops between Seville and Granada). This included numerous opportunities to connect with and absorb the energy and culture of Spain, and to begin to understand its history. As solo travelers and occasional group travelers (4 times), we were very impressed by how much our agency's exceptional service ended up enhancing our trip.
Throughout the process, their guidance and connections made a huge difference, from deeply knowledgeable, personable guides to comprehensive organization of the detail and documents (tickets, etc.), and inclusion of extras, whenever beneficial, such as info as to when and where to park our car and walk or find a taxi and/or provision of a reliable, portable WiFi system that we used constantly when on our own, whether walking or driving. They also purchased advance tickets for us, made rental car arrangements, etc. Plus the itinerary included all items on our wish-list, structured in a logical, smooth-flowing manner.
We also felt constantly assured during our stay that our agency was always just a phone call or text message away, pre-travel or during the trip, whatever might arise. Our travel agency made sure that we never felt alone or without resources.
This is the hardest question. We had many memorable experiences. A few (abbreviated) highlights…
There were many instances during our time in the Basque country (San Sebastian to Bilbao) with our guide including the tapas tour and discovery of beef cheeks-delicious, the real people stories that our guide shared that helped us relate more deeply to the Basque country, and the tour of the Guggenheim (more stories/history).
Then the discovery of Gaudi in Barcelona, especially the tour of the apartment building that we did on our free day, was eye-opening. We viewed many other extraordinary buildings, but we’d have to put the intact Roman aqueduct in Segovia, Alhambra in Granada and the Mezquita in Cordoba at the top of the list. Also, re artists, opportunities to take in so many “never-before-seen” art works throughout Spain was a great treat, including Velazquez, Goya and El Greco plus numerous opportunities to view Picasso’s works in at least 5 cities.
Flamenco was a third category of great enjoyment. Ou travel agency helped us identify the best options and obtained tickets for us (Madrid, Seville and a Spanish guitar program at Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona) – excellent seats every time. Our visit wouldn’t have been complete without Flamenco.
We’ve asked ourselves the same question. Without adding a few more days (for more time at Alhambra & more down-time), we’d change nothing.
