As I’m flying through the clouds from Rhodes to Athens I’m feeling lucky. Even though living through these horrendous TRUMP times are scary, frustrating, embarrassing and many more adjectives I could use,I still feel lucky to live in our country, to have work and to travel, to see my grandchildren thriving, going to good schools, having good health care etc.
I loved my time in Greece. The islands are beautiful and the people are so welcoming. Generous and very helpful to 2 American women traveling alone. I never felt they were anything but so thankful for our gratuities and interest in them and their country.
However, the economy is dreadful. So many PHD’s, College grads who are driving taxis, bartending, working in hotels etc. many educated in Europe and the States. They are home taking care of their parents or just don,t have the funds or connections to make a move. They worry about the future of their children.Still there is such a feeling of community in the islands. Despite the crowds the smells are delicious, the weather is glorious and the sites are fantastic. The people we met had a sense of humor and infectious smiles.Staying in the old town in Rhodes was special. We made some good friends and people at our small hotels in Rhodes and Naxos treated us like family. Our travel agent made everything effortless. She gave us a sim phone and was in touch with us everyday. So here I am sitting on my flight to London waiting...fog in London is slowing everything down. I had waited at the Athens airport for 6 hours until boarding time .So now,the first anxiety I have felt in 12 days. Will I make my 5:15 flight to Chicago?. Breath, I say to-myself. My hiking guide in Naxos would say”Worry is like a rocking chair you go back and forth, gives you something to do and gets you nowhere.
The gorgeous sites the warm weather and sunny weather, the yummy food. Meeting and talking to our guides, drivers and the people at the hotels.
I felt like family..not a stranger..everyone was so helpful as my friend and I maneuvered the streets and the many shops.
Our guide was superb. Greece had some bad weather and she had to scurry around making changes to accommodate us..and she was always gracious. We met some of her friends as we travelled to the different islands and they all love her.
