Overall it was a great experience. The itinerary went smoothly, with just a couple of minor glitches. Our reservations for lodging, excursions, and travel were spot on. The drivers that transported us us were extremely polite and professional, with very nice cars and vans. They were also very knowledgeable, and helpful about what was going on in their locales. The tours we went on were the same. In most cases they avoided the crowds and were able to show us things that were not on the big tour bus itineraries. The lodging arrangements were great.
Kangaroo Island and Port Douglas, in Australia, and Queenstown, in New Zealand. The scenery is wonderful at all of them. Being from a rural area, we enjoyed the more laid back ambiance in these places. Also the lodging at these places was smaller and more comfortable, we were able to connect with the people that worked there. Aussies and New Zealanders are very outgoing and friendly.
We would probably take at least an extra week. There were a couple of instances when we felt rushed to make connections, and were unable to spend more time. (i.e. Adelaide, we flew in and right out both ways, so we didn’t see any of it except from the car ride to the Hotel.) Also, we were late arriving and had limited dining options at a couple of hotels.
We would allow more time for the travel timing and connections. Several early morning departures and tours after long days prior. Would like to have had a couple more down days.
The in-country airlines have different carry-on baggage rules. Not a fan of Jetstar and their surcharges, would stick to Virgin Australia and Qantas where possible.
We would try to avoid the buses. Necessary to get to and from the glacier area of New Zealand unless you drive, but still a long day.
I think an extra week would’ve been able to alleviate most of these. On the whole, the schedule worked out though. So no fault of the travel company.
Would probably wait until mid-February to travel. January and early February is a busy time with the in-country holidays and the Lunar New Year. Lots of people on the go!
