This review is long overdue!
I traveled to Peru with the travel company in August of 2018. I cannot say enough about how wonderful my experience with them was! I had some time off between transitioning jobs and decided to go on an adventure at the last minute. None of my friends or family were available to travel with me so I decided to make this my first solo international trip. As a solo female traveler safety was of course at the forefront of my mind and I wanted to work with a company that would handle all of the details for me so that I could ensure that the trip would go smoothly. I came across this company on Zicasso and decided to reach out to the trip planner. The trip planner co-owns the company with her husband, and she was immediately helpful and responsive from start to finish. She sent me a sample itinerary for my trip and I was able to review it and work with her to adjust it to suit my interests. I was most interested in exploring food, cultural sites, and hiking and she made a custom itinerary that was perfect for me. The total cost included lodging, domestic flights in Peru, transportation, daily breakfast and one dinner, and entry fees for historical sites (including Machu Picchu). I had a tour almost every day and most of the tours were private with just myself and the guide. I was initially a little leery about having private tours since I was by myself, but I cannot say enough about how amazing, knowledgeable, and professional the guides that they contract with are. The food tour in Lima was the only group tour and it was fantastic (quick shout out to the tour group in Lima)! The travel company also make an effort to personally meet all of their guest and they personally were my guides for the tour of the Moray salt flats.
Machu Picchu of course! As a first time traveler to Peru this was a must see for me. I hope to return to see some of the less travelled parts of the country, but for this trip Machu Picchu was definitely the highlight. I did the 5 hour (though I made it in four :) hike along the Inca trail from the 104km mark. The hike was just the right amount of a challenge for me and the views were indescribable.
I also really enjoyed the food tour in Lima. I happened to be on this tour with a friendly group of fellow travelers and the guide was funny, talkative, and really knew his history of food in Lima.
I would stay longer as a 7 day trip is not even enough to scratch the surface of culture of Peru. I spent 1.5 days in Lima and the rest of the time in Cusco, of course there is so much more to see and do.
I specifically told the trip planner that I wanted to do a lot of hiking and see the ruins, and she definitely made that happen for me! However, if I could do it again I would have added a bit more diversity to my activities. Also, I would have spent the first morning in Cusco checking out museums and meandering the city rather than heading straight to Sacsayhuaman from the airport because I felt a bit of altitude sickness when I first landed. I never got hit too bad with it but it made the relatively short hike to Sacsayhuaman much more of challenge for me. This is not a critique of the travel company because when planning my itinerary the trip planner specifically asked me if I was interested in spending time at museums and my response was, nope I want hikes, hikes, and more hikes since I was mostly interested in spending time outdoors this trip.
The only critique I have is that breakfast was to be included daily, however the morning that I flew from Lima to Cusco my transport was scheduled to pick me up before breakfast at the hotel started. I thought maybe breakfast would be served on the plane, but since it was such a short flight it was not. That happened to be the day that I had a tour of Sacsayhuaman right after leaving the airport, and not having breakfast may have added a bit the feeling of altitude sickness. I feel a bit bad even mentioning this here because I'm sure that if I had told the trip planner about this she would have felt terribly and took corrective action, but I continued to have a fantastic trip and the next time I saw her for a tour it didn't even cross my mind to bring to her attention.
Working with the trip planner was very straightforward and simple. It is clear that she and [her husband] really enjoy what they do and sincerely enjoy getting to know their clients.
Since I was traveling alone I was extremely nervous about this trip, but the trip planner took care of everything from A to Z. I felt extremely safe and I did not experience a single hiccup that made me feel uncomfortable or regret my decision to travel with this company. It resulted in an amazing experience that left me feeling proud of myself for taking the leap to travel solo and full of confidence and trust in this company.
