Our trip was broken into 3 parts: jungle, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. We specifically requested some free time in the Sacred Valley and @ Machu Picchu (Agaus Calientes). Overall, I think the combination of planned tours and free time worked out great. This travel agent arranged the trip as we requested, provided for above average accommodations, great restaurants (or meals at the resorts) and excellent tour guides. He was easy with which to work and always accommodating. Where we had free time, he provided recommendations for restaurants to suit our taste/style. When we accidentally short-changed a guide her tip, we arranged to make it up by dropping funds at a hotel desk for him to personally retrieve and get to the guide. He permitted us to book some of our own lodging and international flight arrangements, and arranged for us to get airline mileage for the domestic flights in Peru. We found him and his company to be extremely responsive, quite informative and knowledgeable about the area, the customs, and how to achieve the most with the given time and budget. He was also very helpful with his guides on tipping and packing.
While we found the jungle to be interesting, 4 days was a day or two too much (not a lot to do but some of the excursions were fun and quite interesting). Sacred Valley was just right, very historic and a bit diverse. Machu Picchu was, indeed, the highlight of the trip. The tour guides in all the locations were very knowledgeable, spoke good English and were personable. We found the location of the accommodation in the Sacred Valley too remote and the tour company agents (partner travel agency to our travel company) to be a bit much in some locations--we found their meeting/greeting and walking with us at each location a bit unnecessary (overkill).
Macchu Picchu and the climb of Huayna Picchu were the highlights of the trip. And, Sacred Valley was not far behind. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and captivating with their understanding and ability to communicate the history; and they seemed most responsive to our questions. The food was always excellent. The Alhambra is a must see because they have Alpacas and Llama with which you can mingle, feed and pet (very cool animals). Cicciolina's in Cusco is a must! We liked the walk along the shore in Lima (an outdoor shopping mall and nice restaurants are there).
Would only spend 2 full days in the jungle and would rather stay overnight in Ollantaytambo (with a little free time) instead of Yanahuara, Cusco.
