The trip was wonderful and the travel company excellent. Everything went smoothly. We were met by guides at all the necessary places, so that for Americans who don't speak fluent Spanish, things went effortlessly. There is a certain amount of anxiety when traveling in a foreign country and we felt very comfortable.
No snags whatsoever in the 2 weeks of travel.
the Peru part was special and our favorite.
Machu Picchu is magical. The altitude made trekking difficult despite the Diamox we had taken. We paid for 2 days entrance to the park but only did one day. Getting to the site by bus is a hassle and we had seen all that we needed to see.
As septagenarians we felt that one day was enough. We enjoyed the hotel on the second day relaxing before our train ride back to the Sacred Valley.
Speaking of the Sacred Valley, it is beautiful and worth a 2 days stay at this hotel, a magnificent venue.
The food however was a disappointment but the service excellent.
Cusco is wonderful. The old, historical section is fun to wander around and shop for alpaca gifts.
Unfortunately the vicuna is terribly expensive.
The Cusco hotel is amazingly beautiful as a preserved Spanish edifice. Service is excellent. The hotel restaurant dinner is very expensive. Excellent food around the main plaza which is a short walking distance from the Monasterio and much less expensive.
We were told by many people that Lima is not worth visiting. We felt very differently as the architecture of the old city is quite special.
Two memorable meals were had......one in Lima for which reservations were made a few months in advance because of its popularity.
It was a unique experience with 17 courses coming from different altitudes in Peru. We rolled out of the restaurant and fell asleep sitting up.
The other excellent restaurant was one with a Japanese/Peruvian fusion.
We would only stay in the Galapagos for 3 days. Five days was a little much. We went in April and the humidity was unbearable with temperatures in the low 80s. Not a drop of rain however.
The catamaran was very comfortable with only 13 other folks on board, all very friendly. The service was fabulous and so was our guide for the 5 days. The food was not memorable.
As mentioned above we would not do a second day at Machu Picchu.
We stayed in Cusco for 1 more day than was needed. @ days is adequate.
