Our travel agency and planner did a fantastic job for me and my wife on our recent trip to Peru. During the planning process, our travel planner was very easy to work with. He listened to what we wanted to do in Peru and made excellent recommendations for our itinerary. He was very quick to respond to questions and concerns. The final guide/itinerary he emailed was concise, informative, well laid out and easy to follow. It was always in my possession and I consulted it constantly.
We NEVER had a problem in Peru as the guides, drivers, and transfer reps were always on time, efficient, and friendly. We would have had difficulty doing some things, but they were always there to guide us through any potential difficulties.
We most enjoyed the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. The hotels and the Belmond Andean Explorer train were beyond our expectations. The Peruvian food lived up to its expectations.
If there were a part of the trip that we could have missed it would have been Lake Titicaca. We thought it was a long way just to see a Lake. While the floating islands were interesting, it was not worth the time. Having said that, we would have missed the marvelous Belmond Andean Explorer train experience had we not gone there.
Machu Picchu was the highlight of the trip. I had always wanted to see MP and it was an experience that will stay with me forever. We did not previously know much about the Sacred Valley, but were enchanted by it. The high mountains surrounding the Valley were unbelievable and the Valley itself gorgeous. The Inca ruins were amazing, especially Ollantaytambo. We also enjoyed the Salt Pans. Our accommodations were wonderful - beautiful resort. The train ride on the Belmond Andean Explorer was a trip of a lifetime. We had our own SHOWER in our suite on the train. The food was excellent as was the service. The ratio of guests to train employees was almost 1 to 1. I would be remiss if I did not point out how much we enjoyed our hotels in Aguas Calientas and in Cusco.
I would also like to point out that our three guides were all fantastic. They were knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, and concerned for my wife's welfare as she suffered greatly from altitude sickness.
If I were to do this trip again, I would spend two nights in Aguas Calientas (Machu Picchu) and give myself more time to explore Lima (we were only there for a late afternoon and evening). I would skip Lake Titicaca. It was a long way to go to see a lake and the floating islands were interesting but not memorable.
