Our travel company was outstanding. In their own words, they stated that their goal in planning trips is always to show people not just the natural beauty of Morocco but the warmth and generosity of the people. That is exactly what we experienced. We visited for two weeks at the end of October and drove throughout with a safe and steady driver who had an infectious smile and sunny personality, and our world-class guide, who had encyclopedic knowledge of Morocco and the Berber people and was a true gentleman. Our guides were two of the most enjoyable companions we could have hoped for. They were shining examples of Berber hospitality. We planned our trip about 8 months ahead and our contact was very helpful and informative. All of our hotels, restaurants, excursions and activities were exactly as she described. Upon arrival we breezed through the airport with Fast Track (worth the extra $!) and our driver and guide were there to greet us. The SUV was comfortable and always stocked (water, snacks, umbrellas, tissues). Our guide gave us leather change purses with coins as the restrooms in Morocco require tipping for the the attendants. The tour operator gave us leather bags with our names painted in Arabic and stocked with a laminated booklet of our itinerary (nice memento), snack, map, adapter and telephone to use during our visit to contact our driver and guide if needed. The phone was never needed as our trip was flawless, but nice to have anyway. The pacing of the trip was perfect. We started each day around 9 and finished around 5. During the long drives we had the benefit of our guide explaining things we saw along the roadside which we would not otherwise have noticed, having some Arabic language sessions, and hearing stories of his own Berber culture. Our tour operator checked in along the way and stated clearly that if ever we were dissatisfied with anything (hotel, room, restaurant, activity) we were to call and they would make changes. On our last day, our representative from the tour company met us in our hotel in Casablanca. It was a lovely gesture which we appreciated. All in all, this tour company has mastered the art of travel and to their credit has hired exceptionally good agents and talented experienced guides.
We started in Rabat, then onto Chefchaouen. From there we drove to Fes stopping at Volubilis and Meknes on the way. After Fes we drove south to Merzouga and spent the night in the Sahara. On our 6th day we drove to Skoura for a two night rest at a hotel stopping at the Todgha gorges before continuing our journey onto Marrakech. On the way we visited Kasbah Ait Benhaddou. After three nights in Marrakech we drive to the High Atlas Mountains and then concluded our visit in Casablanca. Some of our favorite experiences included: eating fresh hot donuts from a street vendor in the blue city of Chefchaouan, visiting the tanneries and handmade tile factories in the Medina in Fes, seeing the artistic displays of olives and spices in the Meknes food market, strolling the Roman ruins in Volubulis, relaxing in the serene and understated elegance of Dar Ahlam, watching the snake charmer at Djama El Fna Square and exploring the exquisite small Berber museum in Marrakech, hiking in the Atlas Mountains where the trees were changing colors for autumn, and experiencing the grandeur of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. But the greatest memory of all, was meeting the Berbers. Happy children everywhere. They are kind, hospitable, respectful people who welcome visitors into their towns and homes with ease. Our guide was well-connected and spoke their language so we enjoyed and appreciated their hospitality.
We wouldn't change a thing.
