We just got back from our honeymoon last night and since we are on Europe time, we were up nice and early this morning and looking at all of our pictures from this amazing trip....and crying.
To say that this was the best trip we have both gone on is an understatement. This was the most beautiful and memorable trip of our lives. From start to finish, this honeymoon planned by this European travel company travel was a logistical dream in which the only thing we had to think of on our trip was which restaurants to go to.
We knew we wanted to plan a trip to Italy for our honeymoon and when I figured out that I could get roundtrip airfare to Europe for free on my miles card, I asked to add Paris as a surprise to my wife. We did 3 nights in Paris, then flew to Venice for 2 nights, Florence for 2 nights, a Tuscany tour with private driver, 2 nights in Rome, 3 nights in Positano and wrapped it up with a 2 night stay on the island of Capri. Each stop had a special touch to it whether it was our room or the tours we had planned. We also requested to see sights on our honeymoon, but also have days to relax and explore on our own. The whole trip was planned specifically to this request as we never felt exhausted or bored. In between transfers we also never felt like we were rushed to make the next one or bored waiting around. It was simply the best flow of time, sightseeing and relaxing. Our friends who have gone to Italy for their honeymoon had a few stories about not having train tickets validated or being ripped off by the transfers that they planned on their own and that is a shame that they have that memory. I can simply say that we had zero negative memories from anything planned on this trip, (besides me forgetting a bottle opener and the fact that you can't iron your own clothes in Italian hotels!)
Again, the ease of our travel from place to place was definitely a huge positive. Also, each hotel we stayed at was incredible, whether it was our own private balcony or how we were treated by the hotel.
I'll break down each place and the memory we had from it that stood out the most:
Paris - after one of our tours, our guide gave us a spot that only locals go to in a park near the Eiffel tower. We brought champagne, cheeses and small sandwiches and had our own picnic in the shade overlooking the Eiffel tower. Amazing.
Venice - talk about luck....the day we got into Venice, our hotel informed us that we came on the perfect day. It was the Festival del Redentore which is like Venice's version of the 4th of July. They have a huge 45 minute firework show in their main lagoon. The hotel we were staying at, was facing that very lagoon. And, we had our own private balcony so we had a bottle of champange and watched the fireworks from our room. Amazing.
Florence - we had a day to explore on our own in Florence and we went to the top of the Piazza de Michelangelo. What an amazing view of all of Florence. After all that walking, we were able to relax in one of the most amazing and romantic rooms we have ever been in. It looked like an apartment. Seeing Michelangelo's David statue then following up by probably one of the best meals we have ever had in our lives at La Giostra made this city one of our favorites of the trip.
Tuscany - We had a private driver who was incredibly nice and took his time with us, offering to stop along the sights to take pictures. We then stopped at the Montigliari chianti winery in which we tasted olive oils, balsamics and chiantis and had, again, arguably the best lunch of our lives among the hills of Tuscany.
Rome - Seeing Ancient Rome and the Vatican were sights to see. We also ate at a restaurant Spirito De Vino in which their restaurant presides over a wine cellar that is older than the Colisseum. Their creme brulee was the best we have ever tasted in our lives.
Positano - besides almost fainting at our balcony overlooking the cliffside of Positano and the sea, we ate at the Michelin starred La Sponda restaurant at the Sirenuse hotel. We are not fancy people by any means. We are a "burgers and beer" type of couple, but we wanted to treat ourselves for one night. Expensive....but when you are overlooking the cliffside of Positano and the sea from your private table with the 8 course meal we had, it was truly a memory we will have forever. And....because I think we are the luckiest people in the world, there were fireworks at the end of our meal for a festival of their patron saint in Positano. My wife was starting to wonder if I was planning all these fireworks. Most romantic meal we have ever had. The boat tour we had along the Amalfi coast was also amazing as we were able to swim in a few of the grottos and caves.
Capri - Hotel Luna. Period. When we walked into this.....resort.....there was another American family standing at the top of the entrance (when you enter the hotel grounds, it looks like you are walking into a garden with a shaded walkway full of flowers and fresh plants) and the family was saying how, "the only people who go here are probably people who fly in from helicopter or their yachts." Needless to say we felt very special hearing that and we had to stop and look at the il Faraglioni in which people take boat tours to see. However, we saw this incredible view from our balcony of our hotel room. Speechless. What a way to end our honeymoon. We liked it so much that we got some local raviolis, pastas, vegetables and wine and brought it back to our balcony just so we can enjoy the view. Best ravioli we have ever had in our life....Capri Pasta and a bottle or two of wine is a must if you have a great view from your room.
We would probably never come home. However, I would bring a travel iron as the price to iron clothes ranged from 4 Euro to 8 Euro per article of clothing. We simply hung our stuff outside and let the sea air take care of it as much as possible. I would rather spend the Euro on bottles of wine and prosecco.....which we did to an embarassing degree. (we kept all of our corks as a keepsake and it completely filled the top pocket of our large luggage bag).
